Kevin Feige Addresses Namor’s Mutant Future in the MCU
Mar 21, 2023
Kevin Feige recently teased the future of Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Namor, also known as the Sub-Mariner, was introduced as the antagonist in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and may be the first mutant in the MCU’s main timeline. The plot of the film centers around the aftermath of King T’Challa’s death, which has left Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje striving to safeguard their country from intervening world powers.
In an interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates on The Official Black Panther Podcast, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore discussed Namor’s potential future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Coates directly asked Feige and Moore about their vision for Tenoch Huerta’s portrayal of Namor, specifically regarding the character being a mutant.

“You know, people who read the comics know that there’s 80 years of stories with Namor that we can tap into,” Feige began. “So, where and when, we’ll keep to ourselves for now. But, we think that this is an incredibly iconic character that’s being introduced. Probably, to most people, most movie-goers for the first time. And we expect them to want to see more.”
This isn’t the first time Feige commented on Tenoch Huerta’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A fan previously asked Feige if Huerta’s character Namor might ever get a solo outing. Feige’s response was non-committal, simply saying, “we’ll see.” Namor has a long history of conflicts with The Fantastic Four, and it would make sense for him to return in the upcoming film. Another possibility is the events of Thunderbolts, which could provide an opportunity for Namor to join the team.

Legal Issues Stand in the Way of a Namor Solo Movie in the MCU
Marvel StudiosDisney
As of now, it doesn’t look like a Namor solo movie is on the cards for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unfortunately, legal issues have prevented the Sub-Mariner from making a solo film. This is a common issue with comic book characters as they often have multiple rights holders. When Nate Moore was previously asked about the possibility of a Namor solo movie as part of the MCU, he was open and honest about the legal issues that are currently standing in its way.
“It honestly affects us more, and not to talk too much out of school, but in how we market the film than it does how we use him in the film.” He added, “There weren’t really things we couldn’t do from a character perspective for him, which is good because clearly, we took a ton of inspiration from the source material, but we also made some big changes to really anchor him in that world in a truth that publishing never really landed on, I would argue, in a big way.”
Despite the legal issues, it’s clear that Marvel has big plans for Namor in the future. However, it is still uncertain if he will have a solo film or if he will be featured in other movies, such as a team-up in The Fantastic Four or a role in Thunderbolts.
