Daniels Defend Choice To Direct ‘Star Wars’ Against Accusations Of Being “Sucked Up By The Corporate Machine”

Mar 21, 2023

Yesterday, news broke that Daniels, the Oscar-winning directing duo behind “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” had directed an episode of the upcoming Lucasfilm series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” Fans of “Star Wars” were elated at the idea of such a great directing duo working on one of the most anticipated series of the year. But apparently, there was some confusion about the announcement that led to Daniels receiving some backlash.

In a recent Instagram story post, Daniel Kwan, one-half of the directing duo, Daniels, spoke up about the blowback he has been receiving after the initial report about ‘Skeleton Crew.’ Apparently, many people were reading it as Daniels were going to begin work on ‘Skeleton Crew’ now and direct the entire series. People accused Kwan and his directing partner, Daniel Scheinert, of basically selling out to the big corporations after winning their Oscars. Kwan cleared all of that up with his post.
“Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill,” Kwan wrote. “These headlines are always misleading. Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode awhile ago (before ‘EEAAO’ even came out). We love Jon, love ‘Star Wars,’ love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes.  We shot it last year and had an incredible time working with the most talented cast and crew and i’m excited for you all to see it.”
He added, “Our next film will be an original Daniels project so you can stop worrying (and stop bothering me about it).”

Basically, they agreed to direct one episode of ‘Skeleton Crew’ before “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was even released. Then, last year, they directed the episode, as a way to gain some experience (as well as keep their health insurance). With that knowledge, you can clearly see why Kwan was a bit perturbed by the accusations of selling out.
It’s good to know that Kwan confirmed that Daniels will be doing an original film project next. When you look at the success of ‘EEAAO,’ as well as “Swiss Army Man” before it, Daniels are two of the most unique filmmakers working today. It would be a shame for them to do anything other than original films at this point.
“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is expected to arrive on Disney+ sometime this year.
