The Simpsons Brings Back Season 1 Character After 33 Years
Mar 26, 2023
After more than three decades, a long-forgotten character will make his triumphant return on The Simpsons. It’s been reported (via Yahoo) that the classic character Jacques, who first appeared in the season 1 episode “Life on the Fast Lane,” will be back this weekend with an appearance in this Sunday’s new episode, titled “Pin Gal.” Albert Brooks, who voiced Jacques 33 years go, is back to lend his voice to the role. The character hadn’t been used in a significant way since that first appearance and this is the first time Brooks has voiced the character since 1990.
Longtime Simpsons fans will remember this character, despite his very limited involvement in the show, which is now up to its 34th season. But for those unaware or who need a refresher, “Life on the Fast Lane” picks up with Homer gifting Marge with a bowling ball that he intends to use himself, going so far as to have his name engraved on it. Marge insists on using the ball herself anyway, and at the bowling alley, Jacques, a bowling instructor, takes an interest in her. He attempts to woo her away from Homer, though she ultimately chooses her husband by cutting things off with Jacques. Marge has not interacted with the character since.

In the new episode, “Pin Gal,” a “mysterious figure from Marge’s past returns to coach her for a bowling tournament,” per the official episode description. While it sounds like Jacques will once again be coaching Marge with her bowling, could he also be making another attempt to win over Marge? In any case, it will be interesting for the Simpsons fans who fondly remember the classic episodes to see Jacques and Marge reuniting.

Jacques Has Had Unspoken Cameos in The Simpsons and Its Movie
20th Century
Albert Brooks has voiced other characters during the run of The Simpsons, but he’s oddly never reprised the role of Jacques up until this point. Jacques has had limited apperances as a background character over the past three decades as well, though he’s never had a spoken line. Starting with the following season, he could be seen by eagle-eyed fans in the updated intro for the show. He was also seen in The Simpsons Movie as part of the angry mob approaching the Simpson family home.
There have also been various brief cameos from Jacques in different episodes of the TV show. One notable appearance came in “Team Homer” when Homer and pals formed their own bowling team. One scene sees them defeating another team called the “Home Wreckers” which includes Jacques partnering up with other characters who’ve nearly ended the Simpsons’ marriage: Homer’s Power Plant co-worker Mindy Simmons, who wound up alone with him in a hotel room on a business trip; Lurleen Lumpkin, the country singer managed by Homer who sang about her feelings for him; and Princess Kashmir, a dancer who was photographed with a drunken Homer at a bachelor party, causing some stress in the relationship.
“Pin Gal” premieres on Sunday, March 19.
