Jonathan Majors Explains Why Joining The MCU Has A Huge Advantage Over Performing In Theaters
Mar 30, 2023
Jonathan Majors is just getting started as the MCU’s new “Big Bad” Kang the Conqueror, and his first true appearance as the Marvel villain is almost here in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. For the star, who will also be appearing in this year’s Creed III and Magazine Dreams, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something that he feels has one massive advantage to other acting roles. Comparing the experience to working on a stage play, Majors explained to Collider that the biggest difference is that you know your work in a Marvel movie is guaranteed to be seen by a lot of people. He commented:

“It’s exciting, the fact that… Think about theater, right? You do a play, you have no idea if someone’s coming to that show, you worked your ass off, [but] you have no idea. The tickets don’t really matter, you already checked into a different ecosystem, you know? You’re hoping people are gonna come see the work you’ve done in that space, in that black box, for that long, right? You’re hoping it’s gonna happen. With the MCU, and with Kang, there is such a beautiful sensation knowing that the work that myself and my collaborators do is going to reach people. That responsibility is something I honor and something I really take on. [There are] 50 guys outside. All 50 of those guys are gonna see [‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’]. That’s beautiful, you know what I mean? That guaranteed impact, you know?”

Jonathan Majors Was Drawn To The Multiple Versions Of Kang his MCU Role Required
Disney/Marvel
Playing one Marvel villain is usually enough for any actor to contemplate, but for Jonathan Majors to take on the role of Kang, that meant playing numerous different versions of the same character across the multiverse of the MCU. That was the biggest draw for the actor when taking on the role, as it meant a new challenge every time he plays the character in a new movie. He previously said:
“Kang just lives in his own world in the MCU. No spoilers here, but there’s so many variants of him. And with the powers that are the MCU, that intelligentsia and that brain trust there, they’re just really working to use the IP to its best ability, and it’s extremely humbling that they picked me to step into that. So I’m honored to do it, and I’m always excited to see what we’re doing. And yes, six years after Yale and ten years after North Carolina Shool of the Arts, my first drama school, it’s what you always hoped for as an actor. Kang is a career in itself. It’s either the cake itself or the cherry on top, I don’t know. But to play multiple versions, it’s just beautiful. It’s a workshop every day.”
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be the MCU’s first stepping stone to Avengers: Secret Wars when it is released on February 17, 2023.
