David Lowery Directs An Episode Of The Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Disney+ Series
Mar 30, 2023
Last week, news broke that the Daniels, fresh off their victorious Oscars night for “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” would direct some episodes for the upcoming “Star Wars” Disney+ series “Skeleton Crew.” Now that duo is no longer the only A24-affiliated directors on that, ahem, crew. One Take News reports (followed by a THR confirmation) that David Lowery, who’s done three movies with A24, will direct an episode of the series.

A cause for excitement here? Well, Lowery and “Skeleton Crew” star Jude Law already know each other, as they just worked together on Lowery’s upcoming film “Peter Pan & Wendy.” That film hits Disney+ on April 28. So, it makes sense that Disney and Lucasfilm want a director familiar with Law in the mix on the series. Beyond “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Lowery also made 2016’s “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney, so there’s assurance here that the director knows how to cater to a younger audience.
And that’s what “Skeleton Crew” proposes to do. The upcoming series follows a troupe of young kids, all ten years old, lost in the galaxy during the New Republic, trying to find their way home. Last year, Kathleen Kennedy described the pitch for the series as “”The Goonies” in space,” so expect that to be the vibe. How Jude Law fits into that plot is anyone’s guess, as there’s little additional info about the series beyond Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, two “Spider-Man” alums, serving as creators and showrunners.
“Skeleton Crew” has already wrapped filming, so it may feel a little weird for news about the Daniels and Lowery directing some episodes of the series to be dropping now. But that’s how Lucasfilm likes to play it with their Disney+ series. They kept directors on “The Mandalorian” and “The Book Of Boba Fett” a secret until those shows inched closer to release. As for a premiere date for “Skeleton Crew”? Expect it sometime this calendar year, but who knows exactly when. As for Lowery, he has his fourth A24 movie after “A Ghost Story,” “The Old Man And The Gun,” and “The Green Knight” coming up: “Mother May,” a musical drama with Anne Hathaway and Michaela Cole.
