Why Shazam 2 Retconned The Superheros’ Costumes Explained By Director

Apr 16, 2023

Shazam! 2 director David Sandberg reveals why the DCEU sequel ended up retconning the superheroes’ original costumes from the first Shazam! film.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg reveals why they retconned the superheroes’ original costumes. The DCEU is approaching its end with a few remaining films left to finish the franchise. However, 2023 did not start too well for the decade-long shared universe. The first film to kick off the DCEU’s final year is Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, the sequel has underperformed at the box office.

Sandberg, who directed the first Shazam! film, has been talking more about the sequel over social media lately. Sandberg recently took to Twitter to talk a bit about Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ new super-costumes.

When one fan commented on the old suits, Sandberg responded in a separate tweet about the changes. The Shazam! Fury of the Gods filmmaker made it clear that he had nothing but love for the old suits. However, for the second installment, they wanted to try something new for the heroes.

How The Flash Originally Factored Into Shazam! 2’s Costumes Change

As amazing as the new costumes are, Shazam! Fury of the Gods never explains how the changes came about. It turns out a different DCEU film was supposed to justify how the new suits came to be. Over the last two years, the DCEU schedule has been in a constantly changing flux. Shazam! Fury of the Gods was originally meant to come out last December.

The Flash movie was originally going to come out before the latest sequel. The Flash’s universe reset was going to serve as a justification for why the heroes had new costumes. Sandberg confirmed later on that they were going to lean into The Flash’s universe changes.

At this point, it’s easier to speculate that the Shazam Family’s magic allowed them to alter their suits off-screen. What remains to be seen is the Shazam! franchise’s future after the new sequel. Time will tell if the box office results for Shazam! Fury of the Gods has cost them a chance for a sequel.
