Shazam 2’s Worst Review Comes From The Director

Apr 21, 2023

Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ worst review comes from the movie’s director, David F. Sandberg, in a hilarious fashion. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has fallen short of expectations. While 2019’s Shazam! brought in a healthy $367.8 million at the worldwide box office, the sequel has failed to see the same success, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods bombing at the box office with $131.8 million so far. The movie suffered from a wave of negative critic reviews that likely played a role in its underperforming. Now, a new Shazam! Fury of the Gods negative review rises, only this time it was written by the movie’s director.

On Letterboxd, Sandberg shared his hilarious negative review for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, calling the film “Unwatchable!”

The director has shown that he is aware of one of the main criticisms surrounding Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with Sandberg making a joke about how the movie’s director — himself — needs to realize that both Shazam and Billy have different personalities in the film. The joke review continues a Sandberg trend, as the director also wrote a negative review for the original Shazam!, as well as his other films Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out, with the reviews sharing a 1/2 rating.

Why Shazam 2’s Reviews Were So Negative

Sandberg’s joke Shazam! Fury of the Gods review hits on one of the main criticisms surrounding the movie. Shazam is a dual role, with the lead character being played in adult form by Zachary Levi, while Asher Angel takes up the role of the hero’s teen counterpart, Billy Batson. A common complaint about the Shazam! sequel posits that Levi’s take on the character as too silly, especially when compared to Angel’s more level-headed Billy. The duo feels, at most times, like completely different characters.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods had the difficult job of being one of the final movies of the DCEU. James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently leading DC in a new direction, which contrasts with the four movies from the old DCEU that the new DC co-CEOs have inherited. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is one such film, and the movie’s connection to a dying universe has not been forgotten. The ordeal may have ended up dissuading some from going out to see the movie.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods included a deep dive into Greek mythology through its villains, the Daughters of Atlas, and the presence of several mythological creatures. To bring the creatures to life, the movie employed a great deal of CGI, which was one of the major complaints among the negative critic reviews. With the future of some DC characters up in the air, Shazam! Fury of the Gods may mark the last appearance from this version of Shazam. At least Sandberg is having some fun with it.
