James Gunn Says If DCU Castings Don’t Come From Him, People Shouldn’t Believe Them
Apr 25, 2023
James Gunn addressed fan disappointment over Ron Perlman’s name not being including in the newly announced cast list for DCU project Creature Commandos with a simple message – Don’t believe any casting rumors about the DCU. Like any big movie, the secrets of the new DCU are many and that means fans will have their say in who they believe should be taking on some of the big roles and which storylines and characters will be making an appearance. However, following the casting reveal for Creature Commandos, it has brought another reminder that rumors are just that until they are officially announced.
Rumors of Ron Perlman’s possibly involvement in the new animated DC series came at the same time as those about Frank Grillo being cast in the show. While Grillo’s casting turned out to be correct, some fans instantly followed the casting announcement with questions of where Perlman’s name was. James Gunn provided his usual swift Twitter response with a very simple and direct piece of advice. He said:
“Ron Perlman is an actor I love but he isn’t on the show and he and I never even talked about him being on the show. It might be better if folks stopped believing rumors. If it doesn’t come from me or DC, it’s not to be believed.”
Gunn’s suggestion is certainly a guaranteed way of avoiding the disappointment that many feel when long-standing rumors are debunked. However, when the internet is chock full of “insiders” offering their scoops, it is almost impossible to avoid speculation over who could be about to join some of the biggest movie franchises.

It is sometimes hard to keep track of the amount of casting rumors circulating around certain roles at any one time. Currently, James Gunn appears to shut down a new casting rumor about who will be taking over the high profile role of Superman in Superman: Legacy every day. So far this has included, but is certainly not limited to, Jacob Elordi, Logan Lerman and even former Superman Henry Cavill, who some fans still just cannot let go of.
When it comes to the sharing of information, James Gunn provides fans and followers with a much more detailed insight into the process of the movies and shows he is involved in that many. For that reason, it is not surprising that the writer-director suggests to only believe casting and project announcements that come straight from the horse’s mouth. While there is a need for many to know everything about every upcoming Marvel and DC offering in particular, there was once a time when getting such information before a movie was officially made public was impossible. However, now the internet makes everything just a screen-grab away, it is much harder to prevent rumors quickly becoming indiscernible from facts in the constant stream of news that rolls out every day.
When it comes to DCU news, it seems that if it doesn’t come from Gunn, then it isn’t going to be on target.
