HBO’s latest Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has proven itself to be exceptionally resonant with audiences. The show brought back a love for the franchise that hadn’t been seen since the earlier seasons of the original show that became a cultural phenomenon. The first season, which consisted of six episodes that ranged anywhere from 25 to 30 minutes, was incredibly well received, with each episode being higher rated than the last. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Novella The Hedge Knight, the series continued to obtain impressive viewership numbers, with the season finale receiving peak viewers when compared to the rest of the episodes. According to a report from The Wrap, the season finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reached 9.5 million viewers in the U.S. within the first three days that it was available to watch. Titled “The Morrow,” the episode dealt with the fallout of “In the Name of the Mother,” which primarily focused on the Trial of the Seven and Ser Duncan’s (Peter Claffey) first real experience with combat. It seems that the sharp writing and pacing of the show helped to keep its momentum up, as the fifth episode received 9.2 million views, showcasing an impressive increase between that and the finale. The viewership numbers of the finale are even more impressive when looking back at the series premiere, which earned 6.7 million combined on HBO and HBO Max. Those premiere ratings are impressive in and of itself, but to have a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have a 42% increase since the first episode showcases the longevity and investment audiences have put into the show and its characters. Quality writing, direction, and faith in the source material will go a long way for fans both old and new. Still, the numbers are nowhere near the viewership rankings of Game of Thrones, with this finale record only coming close to the tenth most viewed overall episode of the original series. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has also not bested the most-watched episodes from House of the Dragon Season 1 (the series premiere alone garnered 10.0 million viewers).

There’s a clear respect for George R.R. Martin’s work that bleeds into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While it would have been easy for the creative team to lean more into the dark undertones of Game of Thrones in a similar fashion to House of the Dragon and its intensity, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms fully embraces the less serious stakes and more wholesome novellas. There’s plenty to be said about the chemistry of the two leads, the sharp editing, and the beautiful and understated score that make the show so remarkable.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for a second season, and is currently being filmed in Ireland. Set for release in 2027, fans of the show won’t have to wait long for the next installment, which will be based on the second novella that George R.R. Martin had written. With such a quick turnaround between seasons, hopefully this latest Game of Thrones spin-off will be able to maintain its viewership for subsequent episodes, and continue to standout as one of the better fantasy series of the last few years.
