Based on Min Jin Lee‘s 2017 novel of the same name, “Pachinko” focuses on four generations of a Korean family after a young woman expatriates to Osaka, Japan to begin a new life there.  The period-piece shifts between various stories set between 1915 and 1989.  What’s more, Season 1 features the work of two premier South Korean filmmakers, who share directing duties on the series: Kogonada, who US audiences will recognize for “Columbus” and “After Yang,” and Justin Chon.
Here’s a brief synopsis for “Pachinko” Season 2, courtesy of Apple TV+, which focuses on the show’s first season’s award wins:
Based on The New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, “Pachinko” is a sweeping and deeply moving story of love and survival across four generations. The first season received eleven international awards including a Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award, a Critics Choice Award and a Gotham Independent Film Award.
“Pachinko” Season 2 stars Lee Minho, Minha Kim, Anna Sawai, Yuh-Jung Youn, Jin Ha, Eunchae Jung, Soji Arai, Junwoo Han, and Sungkyu Kim.  Soo Hugh creates and writes “Pachinko,” and also serves as its showrunner. He also executive producers the series alongside Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer through Media Res, and Theresa Kang through Blue Marble Pictures. Kogonado and Chon don’t return to direct Season 2, however.  Leanne Welham, Arvin Chen, and Sang-il Lee replace them, sharing directing duties over Season 2’s eight one-hour episodes.
“Pachinko” Season 2 premieres on August 23, with new episodes premiering weekly through October 11.  So will the show continue its heralded run when it returns this late summer/early fall?  Watch the trailer below to preview the Apple TV+ hit.
