Best Movies Coming to AMC+ in April 2023

Mar 29, 2023

As March draws to a close, streaming services are gearing up to release their content slate for April 2023. This time around, it’s AMC+’s turn. The streamer started 2023 with a strong content slate and wants to continue that streak. While not one of the more prominent names in streaming, it does have the obligatory “plus” necessary.

In April, AMC+ will release new films every Friday of the month. Whatever your interest, AMC+ has new movies that will likely appeal to a broad audience. So whether you want to see a topical social movie, something geared to a sci-fi crowd, a mystery thriller, or even a Bob Odenkirk drama, April has movies for you.

Let’s look at AMC+’s April movie release schedule and what we can expect from each title.

A Lot of Nothing (Friday, Apr. 7)

Scalable Content

This satirical piece tackles sensitive race topics that have been especially present in the news over the last few years. The plot follows a wealthy black couple named James and Vanessa that lives next door to a white police officer. When they learn their neighbor killed a child, they resolve to bring him to justice themselves. Unfortunately, an attempt to perform a citizen’s arrest turns into a hostage situation also involving James’s brother and his wife.

The cast includes Insecure actor Y’Lan Noel, The Last Man on Earth star Cleopatra Coleman, Wynonna Earp’s Shamier Anderson, Lex Scott Davis of The L Word: Generation Q, Justin Hartley of This Is Us, and Ghosts actor Sheila Carrasco. The film initially received a VOD and limited theatrical release on Feb. 3, 2023.

Kids vs. Aliens (Friday, Apr. 14)

Shudder

This Jason Eisener flick is the latest entry in the V/H/S franchise. The franchise centers around viewers discovering strange VHS tapes that possess those that view them. The main franchise has five found-footage-style films, along with one upcoming and two spin-offs. While the franchise has received mixed reviews as a whole, the standalone films have received praise for their successful implementation of “found footage.”

The second spin-off, Kids vs. Aliens, adapts the “Slumber Party Alien Abduction” vignette from 2013’s V/H/S/2. The plot centers on a typical slumber party that turns violent when destructive aliens invade. Two siblings must band together to stop the aliens and survive their attack. The character Gary from the original vignette is set to return, though with a different portrayer.

The rest of the cast includes Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem McDonald, Asher Grayson, Ben Tector, Emma Vickers, Isaiah Fortune, Jessica Marie Brown, and TV personality Jonathan Torrens. Kids vs. Aliens first premiered at the Fantastic Fest film festival in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 23, 2022. The film was later released theatrically and digitally on Jan. 20, 2023.

Life Upside Down (Friday, Apr. 21)

IFC FIlms

Who wouldn’t want to be trapped in lockdown with Saul Goodman? At least, that’s the premise of this Bob Odenkirk-led drama. The film was shot and takes place around early 2020 when the Covid lockdowns first hit. The plot follows three couples whose busy lives are uprooted when they are ordered to stay home. Now trapped 24/7 with their significant other, they must navigate their relationships and this new world.

The film’s AMC+ release comes at a busy time for the Better Call Saul leading man, as his latest TV project Lucky Hank is set to air on AMC and stream on the platform. While Life Upside Down was not as well-received critically as Odenkirk’s other body of work, it did score a premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021. IFC Films later acquired the title and gave it a streaming and limited theatrical release on Jan. 27, 2023.

Besides Odenkirk, the cast includes Marlowe’s Danny Huston, Radha Mitchell of London Has Fallen, and English actress Rosie Fellner.

From Black (Friday, Apr. 28)

Shudder

This movie’s plot follows a mother whose young son disappeared five years earlier. She is destroyed by guilt over what happened when she gets a chance to set everything right again. She must decide how far she is willing to go and whether she will pay a terrible price for the opportunity to see her son again.

The Thomas Marchese-directed horror flick sees Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp in the leading role as the grieving mother. Other stars alongside Camp include Nope actor Jennifer LaFleur, Spy Hard actor John Ales, actor Travis Hammer, and Ritchie Montgomery of Mindcage.

Whatever your preference, it looks as though AMC+ has something for you in April. The month also features the annual “Halfway to Halloween” event on AMC’s Shudder service, so check that out for the classic horror titles they’ll be releasing.
