Colin Farrell Is An LA Private Eye With Secrets

Mar 5, 2024

We hope you’re prepared for a neverending tsunami of limited series heading your way over the next three months. And no, we’re not kidding. It’s actually comical that so many limited series are trying to qualify for the 2024 Emmy Awards when most streamers and cable networks have told writers and producers that moving forward they are no longer interested in making them. Comparably, there is a shortage of new “ongoing” series on most network’s development slates. In fact, outside of Netflix, a new “series” arriving will be a rare occurrence for most of 2024. That is except on April 5th with the arrival of “Sugar” starring Colin Farrell. And today, the Apple TV+ mystery series unearthed its first trailer.

According to a release from Apple, “Sugar” is described as “a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story. Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel’s family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.”
The Los Angeles-set series was created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. This is Protosevich’s first foray into television. He’s best known for writing the screenplays for “The Cell,” “I Am Legend,” and the 2013 English language “Oldboy” adaptation. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg are also executive producers. This is their second series with Apple TV+, following “Invasion,” under Kinberg’s overall deal with the studio. Oscar nominee Fernando Meirelles directed the entire series. He’s best known for “City of God,” “The Constant Gardner,” and, more recently, “The Two Popes.”
Farrell is also an executive producer. His television credits include “True Detective” season season 2 and the upcoming “The Batman” spin-off, “The Penguin.”
Besides “The Banshees of Inisherin” Oscar-nominee, the cast also includes Kirby Howell Baptiste (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire,” “Only Murders in the Building”), James Cromwell (“Succession,” “Babe”), Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”), Dennis Boutsikaris (“Better Call Saul”), Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter,” “For All Mankind”), and Sydney Chandler (“Don’t Worry Darling” and the upcoming FX “Alien” TV series).
