‘Conclave’ Wins Best Film At 2025 BAFTA Awards
Feb 21, 2025
There are only two full voting days left for the 97th Academy Awards and if any members haven’t voted yet, perhaps the 2025 BAFTA Awards will influence their choices. Frankly, it likely won’t, but the crossover in membership between the two organizations may provide a hint of who AMPAS will crown on March 2. In a ceremony hosted by David Tennant, Edward Berger’s “Conclave” made Oscar season more intriguing as it took home four BAFTAs including Best Film.

The Best British Film winner, the Focus Features drama also saw Peter Straughan win Adapted Screenplay and Nick Emerson honored for Editing.
Brady Corbet won Best Director and Adrien Brody won Best Actor for “The Brutalist.” Released by Focus Features overseas and A24 in the U.S., the period drama also made noise as Daniel Blumberg won Original Score and Lol Crowley won Cinematography.
Despite a genuinely substantial crossover in membership, the BAFTA Best Film winner has only lined up with The Academy’s Best Picture winner seven times since 2010. More disconcerting, it’s only happened twice, “Nomadland” and “Oppenheimer,” in the past decade.
In a super competitive field, Mikey Madison won Best Actress for “Anora.” Sean Baker’s dramedy also won Best Casting.
“Emilia Perez” found love as Zoe Saldana took Supporting Actress and the movie won Film Not in the English Language. “The Substance” took the Makeup and Hair BAFTA.
Kieran Culkin continued his Da’Vine Joy Randolph-esque run by taking another Supporting Actor trophy for “A Real Pain.” In a slight surprise, his director and screenwriter, Jesse Eisenberg finally got on the board winning Original Screenplay in a super-competitive category.
“Dune: Part Two” took two below the honors, Special Visual Effects and Sound. “Wicked” won Production Design and Costume Design.
The very British “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” won both the Animated Film and Children’s & Family Film awards. “The Wild Robot” or “Flow” are expected to win the Oscar for Animated Film.
Disappointingly, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” took the Documentary BAFTA over Oscar contenders “No Other Land” and “Daughters.”
Among the other films with multiple nominations, “A Complete Unknown,” “Nosferatu,” “The Outrun,” “Sing Sing,” and “The Apprentice” went home empty-handed.
David Jonsson won the Rising Star Award, an honor determined by a public vote. Previous winners include Tom Holland, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, and Emma Mackey. Last year’s winner was Mia McKenna Bruce.
A complete list of this year’s winners and nominees are as follows:

Sapphic Feminist Fairy Tale Cannot Keep Up With Its Vibrant Aesthetic
In Julia Jackman's 100 Nights of Hero, storytelling is a revolutionary, feminist act. Based on Isabel Greenberg's graphic novel (in turn based on the Middle Eastern fable One Hundred and One Nights), it is a queer fairy tale with a…

Sisu: Road to Revenge Review: A Blood-Soaked Homecoming
Sisu: Road to Revenge arrives as a bruising, unflinching continuation of Aatami Korpi’s saga—one that embraces the mythic brutality of the original film while pushing its protagonist into a story shaped as much by grief and remembrance as by violence.…
