‘Creature Commandos’ Showrunner Confirms Wally West Flash Cameo
Jan 2, 2025
It’s been a busy month for James Gunn’s DC Studios, as they’ve been airing their first animated series Creature Commandos and just released the first trailer for Superman, the official big-screen debut of the DCU. As the rebooted DC Universe begins to take shape, fans have been speculating which superhero could populate the new cinematic universe. Creature Commandos episode 4 recently unveiled the first look at select heroes, including Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, and many more. Now, it’s just been confirmed that another, lightning quick character did in fact appear in the aforementioned sequence, but no, he’s not Barry Allen.
In the apocalyptic vision shared by Circe in the fourth episode, a litany of fallen DC superheroes are shown as a result of Gorilla Grodd taking over the world. Eagle-eyed fans spotted an impaled figure that looked an awful lot like the Flash, specifically his Teen Titans version. In the comics, Wally West was a founding member of the young superhero group. During an interview with The Direct, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey confirmed that Wally West’s Flash does appear in the show in his Teen Titans costume. However, he is not completely certain if West and his superhero suit are indicative of the direction the DCU is headed with the Flash. His words:
“It was a lot of fun. We spent a lot of time on that sequence, as you might guess. I don’t know that it’s representative, necessarily, of anything that James [Gunn] has planned in the DCU outside of the show, just because I simply don’t know… ”
Although the Creature Commandos showrunner is nonchalant about the major cameos, there is often little coincidence to what Gunn puts into his projects. The aforementioned vision from Circe included the main trio of heroes, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman, as well as less-known characters like Booster Gold, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, and Captain Atom. Putting the Kid Flash version of the Scarlet Speedster, with an upcoming Teen Titans film confirmed to be on the way, is likely no mistake by DC Studios. It’s quite clear that the DCU wants to focus on characters that did not appear or have a major role in the now-defunct DCEU, and Wally West is certainly one of them. Ezra Miler most recently portrayed Barry Allen in 2023’s The Flash, so it’s not shocking the DCU is seemingly moving in an entirely new direction.
A New Era of DC Movies is Upon Us
As Creature Commandos streams on Max and the trailer for Superman continues to break records, the DCU is already being setup for success. Of course, there is a long way to go to solidifying the new cinematic universe, but DC Studios is moving quickly to get their next films on track. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, is on pace to begin filming early next year. For those wondering why another Superman-related film is being fast-tracked as the next DCU project, James Gunn says it’s simply because the script for Supergirl was ready-to-go compared to other projects in development.
“I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option.”

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is being released after ‘Superman,’ not because of a universe setup, but because the script was so good.
Meanwhile, major development has been made for a Clayface solo film, written by horror maestro Mike Flanagan. Many fans would have never imagined the third DCU film would be about the Batman villain, and Gunn is of the same mind. But thanks to a “great” first draft and an even better second one, DC Studios felt confident enough to give it a tentative filming schedule and official release date. Clayface is still looking for a director, but it’s expected to be the next one up after Supergirl. The next era of DC movies seems to be one entirely reliant on completed, high-quality scripts thus far, and fans could not be more excited about what’s to come after Superman hopefully sticks the landing in summer 2025.
