Daredevil and The Punisher’s MCU Continuation Applauded by Netflix Marvel Director
Oct 22, 2023
Summary
Director Marc Jobst reminisces about the trajectory of Daredevil and Punisher, expressing excitement for their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Uncertainty surrounding the other Defenders (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) looms as the MCU expands and integrates Netflix characters. Speculations abound about the future of the Defenders, with potential reunions and new portrayals hinted at, but ongoing strikes delay production and news about their complete return.
As the sun sets on one era, it often rises on another. Such has been the case for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s adaptation of Daredevil and The Punisher, and nobody is happier about this new dawn than director Marc Jobst. Responsible for leading Daredevil and Punisher into their onscreen personas, Jobst recently reminisced about the trajectory of these iconic characters and the “inspirational people” who brought them to life.
When Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal stepped into the shoes of Daredevil and Punisher respectively on Netflix, they mesmerized audiences, commanding attention in their standalone series. Yet, uncertainty clouded their future following the culmination of Netflix’s Marvel agreement. This murkiness began to clear with Cox’s cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, subsequently gracing the screen in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the eagerly awaited Daredevil: Born Again, promising Bernthal’s reprisal too.
Recently, while discussing his work on the live-action One Piece show with Screen Rant, Jobst unveiled his sentiments on the dynamic duo’s return. As someone who directed episodes of Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Punisher, the hiatus felt like an unfinished symphony to him. In his words:
Oh, they are just such great — apart from the stories that it enables us to tell, that seemed to resonate with an audience. The best superhero stories are all allegorical, you have a fantastic amount of fun with it, but in the end, they do reflect something of our world, and who we are, who we would like to become. So, to be able to tell more of those stories, and to be able to pull it from the Marvel Universe, and create new stuff, we hadn’t finished. None of us, we all knew we hadn’t finished. We all felt, “Ah, but there’s more to do here.” For all those characters, you know, and for the actors who I’ve worked closely with on those shows. They are just inspirational people to work with, so for them to get the chance to kind of slip into those clothes again, and for the lucky people who are able to work with them, God bless them is what I say.
However, as the MCU landscape expands, lingering questions arise: What about the other Defenders?
Marvel began integrating its Netflix characters in 2021, spotlighting both Cox in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio’s iconic Kingpin in Hawkeye. Prior to Cox’s She-Hulk appearance, confirmation came of his and D’Onofrio’s involvement in the two-season Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, with Bernthal’s return also affirmed.

The Uncertain MCU Futures of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist
Netflix Streaming Services
The unresolved futures of Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist hang in the air. Speculations abound, with some suggesting Daredevil: Born Again may pave the way for Jones’ comeback as Cox’s Matt Murdock seeks her out. Others hint at the forthcoming Echo show, reportedly featuring Cox and D’Onofrio, as the venue for this reunion. Ritter, a fan-favorite, spurred excitement by posting workout images while sporting a Daredevil tee. Is this a hint?
However, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have put a pause on Daredevil: Born Again’s production, dampening hopes for immediate news. In the constantly evolving MCU world, where past characters make comebacks and fresh faces appear, the audience is on the edge of their seats, curious about the forthcoming surprises. If Jobst’s enthusiasm is any indicator, the future is bright, and the stories are far from over.
