DC Studios Doubles Up on Alan Tudyk as Batman Villain Clayface

Nov 20, 2024

The new DC Universe is coming into focus more and more each day. Director and co-captain of the DCU ship James Gunn has been preparing audiences by teasing bits and pieces from the upcoming films, like details about the first Superman trailer. However, fans won’t have to wait long to get a taste of Gunn’s new universe, since his first official DCU project, Creature Commandos, is coming up soon, with the first episode set to release on December 5. And a new interview with the cast of that series may have just confirmed the actor playing a long-rumored Batman villain in live action.

During an interview with Fandango’s Perri Nemiroff, Alan Tudyk discussed voicing Batman villain Clayface in the DC animated series Harley Quinn and the upcoming Creature Commandos. The shapeshifting villain has never appeared in live action before, so fans are eager to know who will be stepping into the role.

When Nemiroff asked Tudyk about the experience of getting to play Clayface in two different projects, he thanked Gunn for giving him the opportunity to play the role multiple times, so it seems pretty likely he’ll continue reprising the role in the DCU moving forward:

“So it’s the same character, that’s what’s really cool about DC. I get to play the same character two completely different ways, and I like them both. It’s really nice that James let me play Clayface. I was so happy. I didn’t even have to ask, I was going to ask. When I saw it in there, he let me know that I got to do it.”

Clayface is rumored to be appearing in The Batman Part II, but Matt Reeves’ corner of the DC universe is separate from Gunn’s mainline DCU – which means there’s no casting overlap between the two. Given Gunn’s desire to maintain casting continuity between animated and live-action projects, and with Tudyk playing Clayface in Creature Commandos, it’s possible the actor will eventually reprise the villain in a big screen DC outing, just not in The Batman Part II.

Alan Tudyk Is Playing More Than One Villain in the New DCU

Since Tudyk is a voice actor with a wide range, his time in the DCU has not been limited to just one role. In addition to reprising the role of Clayface, he takes on the new role of Dr. Phosphorous in Creature Commandos. Tudyk is the second actor to have two different roles in the upcoming animated show, as Sean Gunn is playing both Weasel and GI Robot. Since Gunn has said that multiple actors from the animated series are already in line to reprise their roles for the live-action films, it’s safe to say that Tudyk is number one in line for the live-action Clayface.

In the interview above, Tudyk highlighted the difference between the two animated iterations of the shapeshifting character, which must have been fun to switch between.

“The other DC villains that I play are in ‘Harley Quinn,’ which is very comedic. It’s a straight-up comedy, whereas this one is a drama that is funny, that has humorous elements within it, but it has action, drama, and passion. Clayface is a moron. I play, actually, Clayface in this series…and in this, Clayface is a killer. We have a huge fight, and he’s a homicidal maniac.”

While Gunn has been selective in what he reveals about the upcoming slate of films, he wasn’t afraid to shut down rumors of Lex Luthor appearing in Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos is an animated television series that follows a team of supernatural beings, including a werewolf, vampire, and gorgon, assembled by the government for high-risk missions. This unique group navigates various challenges as they leverage their distinct abilities to combat threats. The show offers a blend of action, horror, and dark humor, set in a universe where classic monsters are reimagined as heroes.Release Date December 5, 2024 Cast Indira Varma , Frank Grillo , Zoe Chao , David Harbour , Sean Gunn , Alan Tudyk , Anya Chalotra , Maria Bakalova , Viola Davis , Steve Agee , Benjamin Byron Davis
