DCU’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’ Facing Delays According to Director

Jan 4, 2025

James Gunn’s DCU is slowly taking shape in the form of his animated series Creature Commandos and the upcoming solo film Superman, but one Caped Crusader remains relatively absent from our screens. Announced in early 2023, Andy Muschietti is set to direct The Brave and the Bold, the first official project from the rebooted DC Universe featuring Batman and, as the movie’s title suggests, Robin (Damian Wayne). The highly-anticipated film, separate from Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise, has not had a meaningful development update since it was revealed. Until now, that is.
During an interview with the California Secreta podcast (via EverythingDCU), Andy Muschietti discussed his upcoming projects after having directed The Flash and It for Warner Bros. While he teased his next production could be a more personal, science fiction film he’s been developing for quite some time, it seems it will be a while until fans are treated to a new Batman film. DC Studios has been prepping The Brave and the Bold since it was announced a few years ago, but as director Muschietti reveals, “The Batman project has been postponed a little bit so I might do another film before that.” It’s unclear why it has been delayed, but the update coincides with Gunn recently revealing that a script has yet to be finished for the Batman and Robin-focused film.
The first look at the new version of Batman was actually revealed in an apocalyptic vision by Creature Commandos, but it was a far cry from what fans expected his DCU debut would be. The Brave and the Bold is still expected to be the audience’s real glimpse at the Dark Knight, which has been teased to deal with the more “fantastical” aspects of the source material compared to Reeves’ grounded crime saga. No matter the case, there is an argument to be made that, despite the delays, the DCU could do fine without Batman in the spotlight, at least for the time being.
The DCU is Already Off to a Promising Start

Thanks to a record-breaking trailer debut, James Gunn’s Superman has given audiences plenty of hope for the official launch of the rebooted DC Universe. While Max’s Creature Commandos has been a critic darling and was recently renewed for Season 2, Superman will likely make or break the new cinematic universe in a genre that has lost some of its grip on pop culture. While DC Studios looks to make a big splash with the self-proclaimed standalone Kryptonian film, their upcoming projects (besides The Brave and the Bold) have been moving quickly as of late.

The Scarlet Speedster has already made his DCU debut.

The next live-action project after Superman is a film about his super-powered cousin, called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The Kryptonian synergy early on in the lifespan of the DCU was not planned, according to Gunn, who recently revealed that the film was fast-tracked due to the strength of the script. That’s the mantra of DC Studios, which refuses to greenlight projects unless the screenplays are 100% ready for production. Supergirl begins filming early next year for a summer 2026 release, while Clayface, written by horror maestro Mike Flanagan, is already headed to theaters just before The Batman – Part II.
