Deadpool 3 Is ‘Way’ More of a Wolverine Movie, Rob Liefeld Reveals

Aug 12, 2023

Ryan Reynolds shocked audiences back in September last year when announcing that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in the upcoming MCU sequel, Deadpool 3. And it seems that his return has greatly affected the direction of the follow-up, with Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld now taking to social media to declare that the threequel is “WAY more of a Wolverine movie” than audiences might expect.

Offering up the information as an “FYI,” Liefeld’s use of big ol’ capital letters heavily suggests that Deadpool 3 will put a major spotlight on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3, which would certainly make some sense considering the popularity of the X-Men member and the actor’s iteration of him. But, could Deadpool fans be left a little disappointed if the sequel focuses more on Logan than Wade Wilson?

The details of how Deadpool 3 will be “WAY” more of a Wolverine movie than we are perhaps expecting currently remain unknown, but Liefeld has previously added weight to the idea that it will follow Wolverine and Deadpool on a road trip. “Bing Crosby/Bob Hope, Road pictures. I feel like that’s what we’re getting,” the comic book writer and artist said last year. “Or maybe it’s more like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Sundance Kid was more serious and Butch Cassidy was more of a conniver. And maybe it’s more like Lethal Weapon, and it’s Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. But somewhere between those models that I just gave you. Bing and Bob; Butch and Sundance; Newman/Redford; Hugh and Ryan. It’s going to be a monster.”

Ryan Reynolds Is More Excited Than Anyone to Have Hugh Jackman Back
20th Century Studios

Despite seemingly ending his legacy as Wolverine in the critically acclaimed Logan back in 2017, Ryan Reynolds has continued to fight to bring Deadpool and Wolverine together for some time. While they stood alongside each other in the much-maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds clearly wants to do the pairing justice, and is more excited than anyone to have Hugh Jackman back.

“We’ve wanted to this this for decades…it’s weirdly the perfect time. I never stopped [trying to get him to come back as Wolverine],” the Deadpool star said last month. “I was just pestering him like a gnat over the last many years. I believe in timing, as much as hard work and luck and all those intersections that are supposed to meet. Timing’s the big one. I think he was ready. I think he was excited. And what we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”

Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapičić, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen, Deadpool 3 is now filming and is scheduled to be released on November 8, 2024, as the first installment in Phase Six of the MCU.
