Deadpool & Wolverine’s Best Fight Scene Explained by Ryan Reynolds & Shawn Levy

Aug 12, 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine takes its titular heroes, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively, on a literal journey through time and space as they traverse timelines and join the MCU. The new movie, directed by Shawn Levy, is filled with more gigantic action sequences than you can shake a vibranium claw at. However, one of the most memorable fights in the film took place in a small, family-sized car, and Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy remember the two claustrophobic days it took to film the sequence.

Reynolds and Levy spoke to Collider following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine for a spoiler-filled conversation. The pair broke down some of the movie’s biggest moments, including the fight scene between Deadpool and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in a Honda Odyssey. The fight sees the two invulnerable superheroes duke it out for hours within the tight space of Nicepool’s squeaky clean car. Now, Shawn Levy his approach and desite to make each fight in the movie feel unique:

“That is what people have been waiting to see. Every Deadpool and Wolverine fight needed to have its own language and be differentiated. So, the adamantium skeleton, the Void, and what’s the opposite of a wide open fight in the void? A very contained space, and it was in an early draft of our script, where the screenwriting team wrote the idea of a fight in a minivan. That was not one of the long ones. I wanna say we shot that entire fight in two days in a real van, in the real woods.”

‘It’s a Knife Fight in a Phone Booth’

Even in the most high-octane action movies, like John Wick or The Raid, incessantly repetitive action scenes will bore the audience. For an action scene to be effective, there has to be consequences and innovation. In Deadpool & Wolverine’s minivan fight, the consequence comes from the state of Deadpool and Wolverine’s fractured relationship. As for the innovation, Ryan Reynolds explained the decision to shoot a fight between two incredibly powerful superheroes in a family-sized car was inspired by the numerous stunt performers he’s worked with. Reynolds also revealed that director Shawn Levy drives the exact same car used in the movie. The actor explained:

“It was also kind of based on that stunt guy expression, which was always, ‘It’s a knife fight in a phone booth.’ So you’re trying to find a new and different way to have that same kind of knife fight in a phone booth experience and the fact that Wade was a used car dealer before and has this inexplicable hatred for the Honda Odyssey, which happens to be an actually wonderful minivan and something Shawn Levy himself owns. Not kidding. Actually owns. Named Betsy. Which is why it’s called Betsy in the movie.”
