Disney Imagineers Unveil Test Footage of Free Roaming Groot Robot to Be Used in Disney Parks

Aug 28, 2023

Imagine wandering around Disneyland when you are approached by a child-sized being that looks a bit like a tree and it utters the words, I am Groot. That is a very real possibility as Disney Imagineers have been showing off tests of a free-roaming Groot robot that will eventually be seen out and about around numerous Avengers themes parts of Disney’s parks.

The Guardians of the Galaxy favorite will be based on a young Groot, and can be seen sharing a stage with Star Lord and Drax pulling off some impressive dance moves. It seems from the footage that the tests are pretty successful and it will likely not be too long before fans of the MCU will get to see him for themselves. Speaking in the video, Executive R&D Imaginer Joel Peavy explained:

“We’re a storytelling company so we want to bring these characters to life in the most authentic way possible. For us, that means a walking, robotic actor… that can move, gesture, and emote in style.”

Executive Creative Director of Disney Live Entertainment Michael Serna added:

“Ideally, we want guests to get excited, but this is the first time I’ve seen guests get visibly excited— adults, kids. It is shocking what they get to see and they understand how unique and fun this is.”

Will We See Groot Again on the Big Screen in Another MCU Adventure?
Marvel Studios

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brought James Gunn’s trilogy in the MCU to a close, but left all the main players still in the game for others to play with in future. This included Groot, who was seen in the mid-credits scene having grown quite considerably, joined with the new Guardians team led by Rocket Racoon. There has been no announcement of whether this group will be getting a new movie in future, but with Adam Warlock having seemingly joined the team, it seems an almost certain thing.

Having spent his time in the MCU uttering just a single line, it is pretty much certain that Vin Diesel will return to throw out a few more “I am Groot” recordings if and when the character does return. Around the time of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s release, Gunn explained the very simple reason why Diesel ended up voicing Groot in the first place. He said:

“We had a bunch of other versions/voice artists but Groot didn’t feel fully Groot until Vin did his voice.”

Of course, over the three movies and a couple of Avengers appearances, Groot has undergone many changes. In fact, this version of Groot is not even the same as the one who started the journey. However, there is no doubt that having gone through being a child, a moody teenager and now a gigantic adult that is ever bigger than his dear old dad, this Groot is most definitely the one that had truly captured the heart of audiences and will now be doing the same thing in real-life at Disney parks.
