Donald Glover & Maya Erskine Update The Married Assassins Movie Franchise As Prime Video Series

Dec 7, 2023

In the current media landscape, every pre-existing piece of IP with any semblance of brand awareness can take to updating. The latest is a new television series expansion of 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” starring  Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. While this new television show, created by Donald Glover (the brains behind “Atlanta”) and Francesca Sloane (“Atlanta” “Fargo”), follows a globe-trotting super-spy couple, it finds different rooms within the concept to play in from the 2005 original.

The most glaring departure, the television show, starts at the very beginning of a romantic relationship rather than following a long-established relationship that has fallen into a rut, as in the original. John and Jane (Maya Erskine from “PEN15”) Smith begins to work at a spy agency, unaware that their positions are contingent on working as a married couple. Forced into a marriage, John and Jane must navigate high-intensity missions and a new relationship slowly becoming more real.
Speaking to Vulture, Sloane stressed her desire to ground the glamorous spycraft in the human and relatable. “While we do have iconic travel and really glamorous shoot-’em-ups and whatnot, the essence of the show is, at one point, a character running home after chasing bad guys all day and taking their shoe off and actually seeing a blister because they wore the wrong shoes.”
The series co-stars Parker Posey and Wagner Moura and features appearances by Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In this version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?
All eight episodes of the first season of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”  will be available on Amazon Prime on February 2, 2024.
