Fast X IMAX Review: A Momoa Powerhouse Performance

Jun 5, 2023

22 years of Fast and Furious movies culminates in this tenth instalment of the franchise but once again the movie hangs in the balance awaiting yet more sequels to come in a rather abrupt finale. We bring you our Fast X IMAX review.

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto and his family have outsmarted and outdriven every foe in their path.
Now, they must confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced. Fueled by revenge, a terrifying threat emerges from the shadows of the past to shatter Dom’s world and destroy everything — and everyone — he loves.
Fast X is full of the usual explosions and chase sequences you’ve come to expect of the franchise but now after the events of Fast 9 John Cena is on the good guys team as he’s back in the ‘family’ and aiding Dominic Toretto against the new threat of the movie in the shape of Jason Momoa.
Jason plays a character called Dante who ties in with quite a key character from the bank vault scene as shown in Fast 5.
Momoa îs captivating from start to finish playing a character reminiscent of the Joker from the Dark Knight movies with a camp twist. His character is as ruthless as he is campy but out of all the advisories that Dom has faced over the franchise it really does feel as though Momoa is the most dangerous of them all as he succeeds in the majority of his tasks through the entire movie, always once step ahead of the gang.

His character was written to perfection and executed phenomenally and he grounds the movie. Fast and Furious has never been a solid written franchise, it never has been as it always relies on big explosions and set pieces to distract away from quite simple storylines but now character after character and family member after family member has saturated the cast line-up it needs a grounded role. Momoa is that grounded role as he threatens the entire family and everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve.
Dante is on a path of revenge for the loss of his father who he blames Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) for but at the end of the day he wasn’t the person who pulled the trigger. Cue a cliffhanger ending and yet another set up for a ‘Part 2’ instalment of Fast X.
You can’t hate Dante as a character and everyone else’s roles seem to downgrade as a result because he’s THAT good. Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris usually have the comedic roles down to a tee but they’re subsided in this movie, overshadowed at every turn much like how Dante overshadows the plans of the family and on a big IMAX screen it’s a joy to behold.

I’d steer clear of 4DX unless you fancy inheriting whiplash injuries as this film is relentless with stunts and car sequences with a particular scene in Vatican City being relentless in destruction and jolty movements.
Tributes are still paid to Paul Walker all these years later cementing his importance to the franchise with even a Fast 5 scene used within this particular movie in addition to images of Paul and references to his character within the script. It’s a nice touch that his memory lives on through his character in the franchise when they could have easily had his character vanish without a trace after the finale of Fast 7.
Fast X has been formatted specifically for IMAX screens and the picture quality and superb audio combine for an immersive experience. Every engine rumble and explosion personified and amplified with cinematic effect and rather than the films being a display of solid storytelling they resort to just a disengage your brain and enjoy the cinema type experience.

Explosions, car chases, visuals aplenty and immersive sound make Fast and Furious movies a big screen experience even if albeit they’re a little light on depth and storytelling.
But I will say that this feels like the first instalment where Dom is vulnerable. He’s usually this untouchable superhero like phenomena throughout the franchise where fight sequences that would kill Batman he seems to survive. But here we see a vulnerable side and whilst still outlandish the movie doesn’t go to the heights of outrageousness that Fast 9 did although a certain Dam scene was a little stupid, but it’s big screen action stupid and that’s why people watch.
Buckle up for Fast X part 2 coming soon and stay tuned for the post credit scene that sets up that very part 2 / sequel rather nicely.

Our Rating

Summary
Hollow in many places but Fast X still delivers that big screen experience but whilst poorly written characters have been a feature of the past Jason Momoa steps in with a powerhouse performance that really does threaten the family and everything they’ve built. A solid performance in this high-octane action packed IMAX spectacle.
