Godzilla Minus One Director Takashi Yamazaki in Talks to Direct MCU Movie

Nov 9, 2024

Takashi Yamazaki, the director of Godzilla Minus One, could be stomping his way over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a pleasant surprise when Godzilla Minus One took home the Oscar for Best VFX earlier this year, despite its fractional budget in comparison to its blockbuster competition. As well as hosting one of the best looking Godzillas on screen in years, Minus One also told a tear-jerking story about a kamikaze pilot returning home after failing his duty during WWII, and being desperate to prove himself when Godzilla descends on 1950s Japan. While Yamazaki is already working on another Godzilla movie, the director could also be making his way to the biggest cinematic franchise in the world.

Per VirtualGorilla, Takashi Yamazaki revealed at the Tokyo International Film Festival that he’s had conversations with Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige. During a panel celebrating the 70th anniversary of the iconic kauiju, Yamazaki recalled a conversation he’d had with “the president of Marvel.” Feige reportedly began by sharing his fandom for Godzilla. Yamazaki recalled, “The president of Marvel told me, ‘Wadatsumi!’ [the codename for the operation to defeat Godzilla].”

“We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.”

Yamazaki then dished that it might not have been a chance interaction. Judging by his words, Marvel Studios might be looking for a way to bring the beloved kaiju director to the MCU in the future. “[Feige] told me, ‘We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that,'” Yamazaki said, adding, “I think it’s just lip service.” While Yamazaki believes Feige’s words were just niceties, fans are desperate to see more of the beloved director’s work post-Godzilla Minus One.

Which MCU Movie Could Takashi Yamazaki Direct?

As interesting as it would be to see Takashi Yamazaki take on a Marvel movie, it’s hard to figure out which kaiju (providing that’s the direction he takes) would work best on the big screen without delving too deep into Marvel Comics’ back catalog. The comic books of the 20th century were known for ripping off popular concepts and franchises and, as a result, Marvel has its own version of Godzilla. However, this might be a bit too on the nose for Yamazaki’s MCU film.

Of all the kaiju from Marvel’s back catalog, the best option would likely be Red Ronin. The giant 105-foot-tall robot was created by scientists at Stark Industries to take down Godzilla. While the MCU probably won’t ever use the actual Godzilla, transforming Red Ronin into a villain for a standalone MCU movie would be exciting to see, especially with such an experienced director as Yamazaki at the helm. Of course, if Red Ronin were to be the villain, the movie would need a hero – unless this hypothetical movie calls on Yamazaki’s experience with one of the best movies featuring a friendly, giant robot: The Iron Giant. It’s a completely far-fetched idea, but Yamazaki moving from killer kaiju to sympathetic giants in the MCU would certainly make for an interesting movie.
