Golden Globes Host Nikki Glaser Slams DC’s ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
Jan 19, 2025
While the Oscars and Emmys are a prestigious affair, with the occasional joke and a lot of tears, the Golden Globes often take a more relaxed approach to the awards show format. Past years have seen Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg, and Ricky Gervais tear into the attendees, while taking jabs at some of the biggest pop culture moments of the year. This year, comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the event, and wasted no time ripping into one of the worst comic book movies of the year — Joker: Folie à Deux.
During her opening monologue, Nikki Glaser began joking about Wicked, the musical that is still dominating theaters. Glaser remarked about some theaters being unhappy about fans singing during screenings. “Some people complained that the movie was ruined by people singing,” she began. She then quickly turned her attention to Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, which drastically dropped the ball during its release last year, after the 2019 original was such a fan favorite. Glaser joked:
“And then at Joker 2, some people complained that the movie was ruined by the images on the screen, and the sounds that accompanied them.”
Joker: Folie à Deux saw Joaquin Phoenix return as Arthur Fleck, joined by Lady Gaga as the movie’s interpretation of Harley Quinn, named Lee. The film was slated by fans and critics, partly for its weak script, and partly for its “musical” numbers. Folie à Deux sits at a shocking 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. Did Glaser make the one joke and move on? Of course not. Just like Folie à Deux, Glaser returned for an unnecessary sequel. “I’m sorry Joker 2,” she continued, pretending to feel bad for ripping into the movie, before flipping the script, saying:
“Where’s their table? Oh, they’re not here.”
2024 Was a Weird year for Superhero Movies/Shows
2024 was an incredibly strange year for the superhero genre. Joker: Folie à Deux was expected to carry on its predecessor’s legacy as one of the most original comic book movies of recent years (ignoring the fact the original is a rip-off of Martin Scorsese’s King of Comedy). However, it bombed at the box office, and fans quickly turned against Phoenix, Gaga, and Phillips. Something similar happened to Prime Video’s The Boys, which released its penultimate season last year. Season 4 was divisive, especially after the first few episodes. While it managed to claw back the fan base, it was far from the perfect hype builder the show needed going into its fifth and final season. Then there’s Sony’s Spider-Man villain-verse, which released two movies last year (Madame Web & Kraven the Hunter). However, both films are probably better left forgotten.

The Golden Globes’ Biggest Film and TV Winners are Both Streaming Now
The two biggest winners of the night are available to watch on streaming.
Deadpool & Wolverine lived up to everyone’s expectations, at least at the box office, becoming the highest-rated R-rated movie of all time, ironically, beating Joker. However, there’s still a lot of debate as to whether it’s actually a good movie or not. And then there’s The Penguin. The HBO spin-off from The Batman was undoubtedly the best comic book property of 2024. The series starred Colin Farrell as the titular villain, for which he won a Golden Globe for his performance.
Joker: Folie à Deux is the sequel to Todd Phillips’ critically acclaimed comic book thriller Joker. Reprising his Academy Award-winning performance as the failed comedian Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix revisits the iconic DC character alongside Lady Gaga, who makes her debut as Joker’s lover Harley Quinn in this standalone continuity of the DC Universe.
