Guardians of the Galaxy’s Zoe Saldaña Doesn’t Want Roles That Involve Long Make-Up Routines Like Gamora

Nov 15, 2024

Zoe Saldaña returned to screens as Gamora in the MCU last year as part of the ensemble cast of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the chances of her reprising the role again in the future seem quite slim right now. Currently, Saldaña is leading the second season of Paramount+ series Lioness, a Taylor Sheridan action series that is a world away from the cosmic adventures and green-skin of the actress’ Marvel character, and it seems she would like to continue to play characters that are a little more human – but would happily play a human in space without the excessive make-up requirements.

When it comes to actors who have starred in some of the biggest movies of all time, there are few who can boast the same kind of resume as Saldaña. Thanks to her roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and James Cameron’s Avatar movies, the actress is the only person to have a credit in the three highest grossing movies of all time. Not only that, but her appearance in Avatar: Fire and Ash next year could see her add yet another movie to that list.

However, despite Saldaña’s unending love of space and cosmic roles, she really does not have any desire to spend hours back in the make-up chair, which spells bad news for those hoping for the return of Gamora in another Marvel outing. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Saldaña explained:

“Maybe. I can’t ever say that I won’t ever go to space. I love being in space. I would like to just be a human in space. I don’t see myself going through the three to four hours every morning of makeup. I’m so concerned about just the chemicals and stuff that you’re putting into your system for long periods of time, because we shoot these films in a period of five months. But I love science fiction.”

Zoe Saldaña Regrets One Thing About Her Avengers Appearances

While Saldaña may seem to be done with the excessive make-up routine required to turn her into Gamora, she recently reflected on her role as the member of the Guardians team. In an interview with Variety, the actress explained that there is one big regret she has about her later appearances in the franchise and the wish she has that she could go back and rework some of her scenes.

“I wish I could go back and reshoot what Gamora was going through in the ‘Avengers’ movies. I was not quite understanding what the Russo Brothers [were doing]. They’re excellent filmmakers and the opportunity they gave me was of a lifetime. To highlight Gamora in such a way in their films is something I’ll always be grateful. I wish I could go back and redo it so I could push a little harder because it was such a great opportunity to play a daughter having issues with a dad and whether or not she’s having this opportunity to reconciliate or to simply just walk away. That would’ve been a great opportunity had I been a little more aware of it then.”
