James Gunn Coyly Addresses if Lois Lane Knows Clark Kent’s Secret in ‘Superman’
Dec 19, 2024
While we try to remain calm as we await the first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman
, a new interview with the director has revealed that the reboot may keep one of the more controversial elements from Zack Snyder
’s Man of Steel. Discussing the first DCU movie with Gizmodo, Gunn hints that intrepid reporter Lois Lane, played in the movie by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan
, may already know who Superman really is.
Lois knowing that Clark Kent is really Superman (spoilers if you didn’t already know) from the start is not traditionally the case in the comics, with Snyder making the change on-screen in 2013’s Man of Steel. While the change was seen by some as a way of bypassing the inherent “ridiculousness” in Clark Kent’s disguise, others felt that it took away from an integral part of the lore, especially after the secret identity farce was performed so well by the late, great Christopher Reeve. Asked whether Lois Lane knows Clark is Superman, Gunn replies…
“Well, we’ll see. She knows who Superman is.”
Gizmodo notes that this means she “probably” doesn’t know, but Gunn’s words here are very open to interpretation. Which was likely his intention. This could mean that Lois knows but chooses to keep it to herself. It could mean she has no idea that Clark and Superman are one and the same. Or it could mean something more philosophical, that Lois knows who the man is, and it doesn’t matter that she isn’t aware of his secret.
Lois & Clark’s Relationship Is Unlike Anything “We’ve Ever Seen in Any Superhero Movie”
While James Gunn plays coy about the Lois and Clark’s secret details, the filmmaker is more open about the relationship between the pair of reporters. In the interview, Gunn says the relationship is unlike anything “we’ve ever seen in any superhero movie ever.”
“I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever seen in any superhero movie ever. It’s a complicated relationship and we really get into it,” Gunn said. “There’s long scenes that are about their relationship and the way they relate and what it would be like for a person who’s this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, skeptical journalist, to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper.”
