James Gunn Unveils Official Trailer For Creature Commandos at NYCC

Oct 23, 2024

Fans have gotten another look at the first true entry in James Gunn’s new DC Universe as the DC Studios co-president revealed a new trailer for Creature Commandos during New York Comic-Con. When Gunn announced his new DC slate, which is under the banner of “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters”, fans were taken by surprise when Creature Commandos was on the line-up as an animated series. Not only that, but it would also be the kick-off entry into James Gunn’s new DCU.

While the first trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con in July gave a general pitch for the series, this new trailer highlights the characters that make up the Creature Commandos and hints at their backstories. Fans get to see action showcasing The Bride, Frankenstein’s Monster, Doctor Phosphorus, The Weasel, G.I. Robot, Nina Mazursky, and even the main villain, Circe. Gunn and Warner Bros. also are letting fans know this is a new era for the franchise, as the trailer’s tagline features “From James Gunn Comes The New DCU.”

Creature Commandos, created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, were introduced in Weird War Tales #93 in November 1980. Like Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Creature Commandos was a minor team in the comics, but the oddball nature of the characters and their outsider aspect makes them perfect for Gunn’s sensibilities. Gunn wrote all seven episodes of Creature Commandos and also served as showrunner, while legendary French comics artist Yves “Balak” Bigerel is the series’ supervising director.

The New DCU Begins With Creature Commandos

Creature Commandos is the first entry of James Gunn’s DCU. Following Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr., will appear in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 in 2025. It appears that Peacemaker Season 1 is still somewhat canon with Gunn’s new DCU as Amanda Waller being forced to use the non-human Creature Commandos seemingly is from the fallout of Task Force X activities being outed by Waller’s daughter Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). The Weasel also appeared in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and despite appearing to be the first member of the squad to die, the film’s mid-credit scene showed that he survived.

Gunn’s Creature Commandos is set to debut on Max on December 5, 2024, and is one of the most anticipated series for the final part of the year. DC’s other major series, The Penguin, will conclude on November 10, 2024, with Dune: Prophecy taking over HBO’s coveted Sunday slot starting November 17, 2024, and running until January 5, 2025.

The show offers a blend of action, horror, and dark humor, set in a universe where classic monsters are reimagined as heroes.Release Date December 5, 2024 Studio
