Jim Carrey Reveals 1 Major Condition For Grinch Return If A Sequel Goes Into Development
Dec 12, 2024
Jim Carrey addresses his potential return as the Grinch if a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas gets made. Released in 2000 and based on the 1957 Dr. Seuss book of the same name, the Ron Howard movie follows Carrey’s eponymous character as he plans to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville. The movie was a box office success but The Grinch 2 never materialized, though false rumors did emerge in 2023 about a follow-up with Carrey back as The Grinch.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey brings up the possibility of playing the Grinch once more, revealing that he would consider returning. According to the actor, CGI and motion capture would have to be used over traditional makeup and prosthetics, which made filming the 2000 film a challenge. Check out Carrey’s comment below:
“If we can figure out
The Grinch
… The thing about it is that, on the day, I had to do that with a ton of makeup, and I could hardly breathe, and it was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids, it’s for the kids, it’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things.”
What Jim Carrey’s Grinch Return Would Mean For The Franchise
The Actor Is Semi-Retired
Carrey has been selective about his projects in recent years, with his biggest projects including the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the TV show Kidding. The actor made headlines in 2022 when he revealed that he was entering a state of retirement, but he’s now poised to appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a David Robert Mitchell movie called Evergreen Pines and the Fading Summer. Still, any project Carrey takes on from this point forward will be a fairly big deal since his general movie output is now so low.

Over the past three decades, Carrey has given audiences some truly memorable characters and, though he didn’t invent The Grinch, he certainly put his own stamp on him. 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas earned mixed reviews from critics (it has a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes), but it did gross over $345 million. Considering how successful the original was and the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, for which Carrey has been widely praised for his role as Dr. Robotnik, any Grinch sequel would probably be a hit.
Should Carrey Return As The Grinch?
At this point in Carrey’s acting career, it would probably be more exciting to see him do something new than revisit the world of The Grinch. Even though the film fared well at the box office, its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is still a lackluster 58%, suggesting his efforts may be better spent elsewhere. Instead of another major franchise, it would be interesting to see Carrey back in the spotlight in a big comedy wearing his own skin instead of that of The Grinch.
A sequel book by Alistair Heim called
Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Lost Christmas
was released in 2023.
That being said, if Carrey did want to revisit The Grinch through the magic of motion capture, that would still be quite exciting. Not limited by prosthetics and makeup, it would be interesting to see how the character evolves. Ultimately, a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas seems unlikely, but it certainly seems like Carrey hasn’t closed the door on the idea.
