John Boyega’s Training Videos Have Fans Speculating on Possible MCU Role

Oct 7, 2024

British actor John Boyega — best known for his international breakout role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — has sparked speculation about his next role after numerous Instagram posts showed the star hard at work in the gym. Although Boyega has previously expressed his disinterest in joining the MCU as a superhero — or supervillain — the intense training that fans witnessed has them wondering if Boyega will appear in an upcoming Marvel movie after all.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Over the past few days, Boyega has uploaded several pictures to his Instagram account, all of which show the Star Wars actor putting in some serious time at the gym. Since it’s unlikely that Boyega is prepping for another Star Wars film, given his less-than positive comments about his experience in the franchise, fans are now wondering if Boyega’s intense training regimen is a sign of a prospective role in the MCU.

However, Boyega has stated previously that he is not interested in a superhero role. In 2021, a rumor that Boyega might be joining the cast of The Marvels was debunked in an interview with Men’s Health, during which Boyega officially revealed that he had no plans at the time to participate in the MCU. “That’s not in the vision for me now,” the actor stated.

I want to do nuanced things…I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas.

Since then, Boyega has lent his talents to undeniably innovative projects such as Abi Damaris Corbin’s thriller-drama Breaking and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical action-adventure The Woman King. Of course, his training could also be a sign that the long-awaited sequel to Attack the Block could finally be getting underway. Director Joe Cornish last teased Attack the Block 2 back in 2023, but there has been little word on the movie since. Whether Boyega’s intense training is a sign that things are finally shifting in the right direction for the movie, we can only wait and find out.

Boyega Is Unlikely to Return to the Star Wars Universe

Whatever Boyega is training for, it’s very unlikely to be another Star Wars film. Since the conclusion of the sequel trilogy in,2019 Boyega has discussed at length his dissatisfaction with the treatment of his character, Finn, citing that he often felt shunted to the side along with the films’ other characters of color. Speaking to British GQ, Boyega had this to say about his experience:

Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all. So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience.

Although Rey Skywalker actress Daisy Ridley has expressed her desire for Boyega to return to Star Wars, it’s understandable why he’s ready to be done with that phase of his career. And if Boyega is indeed setting a course for the MCU, fans can only hope that it will be a much better experience.
