Jon Bernthal’s Punisher “Absolutely” Has a Future in the MCU, Marvel Boss Declares

Nov 17, 2024

Daredevil: Born Again will not be the last time we see Jon Bernthal as the beloved Marvel vigilante Frank Caste, a.k.a. The Punisher, according to Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum. After being introduced to much acclaim in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil show, Bernthal’s iteration of The Punisher led two solo series before every Marvel-related Netflix show was canceled. Now, he will return alongside Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear and, despite his “heavy” and “dark” nature, he has a big future in the MCU going forward.

Winderbaum was asked in an interview on YouTube channel @BrandonDavisBD whether he could see Frank Castle returning to the MCU following Daredevil: Born Again, with the Marvel TV boss offering a hugely promising update, saying…

“100%. Yeah, we feel the same way. I mean, you know, he’s so great in that role and I can’t wait for you to see him on screen in this series. There’s absolutely a future for him in the MCU afterwards.”

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Will Play a Major Role in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Jon Bernthal was first introduced as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2 back in 2016. The Emmy Award nominee quickly proved himself to be pitch perfect casting for the Marvel icon, with his role in Daredevil leading to his own spin-off series a year later. The Punisher series ran for two seasons, and followed Castle as he uncovers a conspiracy surrounding the tragic deaths of his family.

Much like the rest of the Netflix/Marvel shows, the solo series was unceremoniously canceled in 2019. But not even cancelation can keep The Punisher down. The story of Bernthal’s Punisher and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will continue in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which is now scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025. Last October, it came to light that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was unhappy with what he’d seen from the series, deciding to tear everything down and let go of all the writers and directors who had been on board. The Punisher producer Dario Scardapane will now serve as showrunner, with Bernthal all set to reprise the role.

Daredevil: Born Again will take inspiration from the comic book arc “Mayor Fisk,” which finds New York falling to The Kingpin as he becomes the city’s newly elected mayor. The story finds Matt Murdock working for Fisk (something that has been hinted at in earlier set images), with the Kingpin of Crime using his talent for spin and false philanthropy to wage a war against costumed vigilantes.

Alongside Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, Daredevil: Born Again will also star Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, Sandrine Holt as Vanessa Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, and Wilson Bethel as Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, aka Bullseye, as well as Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, and Genneya Walton.
