Kevin Costner Gives First Positive Update On Horizon’s Future As Chapter 2’s Release Remains Unclear
Nov 18, 2024
With the first movie having enjoyed success on streaming after its box office disappointment, Kevin Costner might be seeing some groundswell in Horizon: An American Saga’s future. The planned four-part Western epic saga got off to a poor start when, after its lackluster Cannes Film Festival premiere, Chapter 1 released wide to generally mixed reviews from critics and a rough $38.2 million box office haul. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2’s release was subsequently delayed indefinitely by Warner Bros., while production was halted on Chapter 3 due to funding issues.
During a recent appearance at the Deadline Contenders Los Angeles panel, Costner opened up about the ongoing uncertainty of the Horizon: An American Saga franchise’s future. Though still acknowledging that he doesn’t “know how I’m going” to make his planned third and fourth installments, the two-time Oscar winner revealed he has been having meetings with notable-yet-unnamed billionaires for potential funding, the first hopeful update he’s given on resuming production on his Western saga in months. Check out what Costner said below:
I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make it, and then I’m going to make the fourth one. And if you want to say “the end” at that point, then that’s the end. It’s my own private UFO. I’ve seen it, and I will never forget it, and I chase it as long as I can. … I will figure out a way to bring you 3 and 4, because you’ve gone to 1, and you’re gonna go to 2, and we’re all gonna go west together.
What This Means For Horizon: An American Saga’s Future
Costner Has A Lot Of Negotiating Ahead Of Him
As reassuring as Costner’s comments are regarding his quest to resume production, the road ahead for Horizon: An American Saga is still not a straightforward one. For starters, Chapter 2 has yet to secure a release date from WB, a point that became even more of a concern after the movie’s premiere at 2024’s Venice International Film Festival, where the Horizon sequel garnered similarly underwhelming reviews from critics. At the time of writing, Chapter 2 holds a 40% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, a fair step down from Chapter 1’s 51%, albeit has only 10 reviews calculated thus far.
Related Kevin Costner’s Horizon 2 Was Supposed To Release Today – So What’s Going On Now? Kevin Costner’s long-gestating passion project was supposed to be released in four parts, but a box office misfire for Chapter 1 may have derailed it.
Without the sequel’s box office to factor in, it could be difficult for other financiers to determine how much they want to invest in future installments. Additionally, with how invested Costner himself is, and therefore wanting to maintain creative control on the sequels, both Horizon: An American Saga — Chapters 3 and 4 will still need to see him partner with someone who puts their full faith in him and asks for little in return.
Our Take On Horizon’s Future & Potential Funding
Costner Should Look To Mend 1 Bridge For Help
With how uncertain he remains about finding the funding for the final two Horizon: An American Saga movies, I think it might actually behoove Costner to look to completely mending the bridge between him and Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan. While he may not be a billionaire on the same level as Costner says he’s meeting with, Sheridan has multiple irons in the fire, including a coffee brand with Cole Hauser, and being involved in various cowboy businesses, thus giving him plenty of extra avenues to pull from for offering Costner some funds for the other movies.
