Kevin Feige Clarifies What’s Canon in the MCU & Teases a Much Larger Multiverse

Dec 2, 2023

Summary

Kevin Feige clarifies what is canon in the MCU, hinting at the potential appearance of familiar characters in the future Multiverse Saga. Marvel Studios now has more focus on television projects, with the possibility of bringing back characters from previous TV shows and films. The concept of the multiverse opens up possibilities for mixing stories and characters, potentially allowing the MCU to converge with earlier Marvel franchises.

The multiverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be much larger than fans imagine. Kevin Feige has now clarified what is canon within the franchise, hinting at the potential appearance of well-known characters in the future of the Multiverse Saga. Although the MCU has been dominating not only the big screen but also the small one for years, initially the main focus of the franchise led by Feige was placed on film projects and not much importance was given to television projects. Ten years ago, Agents of SHIELD was released, while the Marvel Studios film saga was going through one of its best moments, and although the connections were there at the beginning, the series gradually moved away from what fans were seeing in the movies.

Marvel Television continued to launch shows such as Inhumans and Agent Carter, while at the same time independent series were produced such as The Defenders’ universe on Netflix, Marvel’s Runaways and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger. However, with the launch of Disney+ at the end of 2019, Marvel Studios took control of the television projects related to the comic company’s characters, and while the series that were outside the studio were canceled, a new phase was born for the MCU that put a lot of focus on television.

With the official introduction of the concept of the multiverse, the MCU has opened the possibility of bringing back characters from those shows, as well as those from old films like the X-Men saga or previous adaptations of Fantastic Four, as they did with the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. And it seems that it is something that could be repeated in the future.

Other Marvel Timelines May ‘Crash or Converge’ in the MCU
Marvel Studios

In a new book titled Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline, an official statement from Kevin Feige is included where he talks about the projects carried out outside of Marvel Studios and the possibilities that at some point they will intersect with official productions of the franchise (via The Direct):

“In the Multiverse note, we recognize that there are stories—movies and series-that are canonical to Marvel but were created by different storytellers during different periods of Marvel’s history. The timeline presented in this book is specific to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline through Phase 4. But, as we move forward and dive deeper into the Multiverse Saga, you never know when timelines may just crash or converge.”

The concept of the multiverse is nothing new to superhero stories. Both Marvel, DC and other comic book companies have used the possibilities offered by the existence of different realities to mix stories and characters. The MCU could take all this to a new level in Deadpool 3, converging the Marvel Studios universe with the Fox films, and then introducing its own versions of franchises like the X-Men and Fantastic Four, and even Daredevil, a character who will get a fresh start but will maintain its protagonist from the series developed by Netflix.

It certainly sounds like there is much more multiversal madness to come.
