Have you ever wondered what would happen if a wizard from the Harry Potter universe got bored with spells and chose physical violence instead? Manga artist Hajime Komoto has, and it led to one of the best new action fantasy anime in recent years. A-1 Pictures’ Mashle: Magic and Muscles (such a great title!) debuted in 2023 to great acclaim from fans and critics. As part of Netflix’s bid to expand its anime offerings, the first season was added to the streamer earlier this year. But, action and fantasy fans can soon dig into the show’s far superior second season, as Mash Burnedead puts his muscles on full display in a tournament arc! Season 2 of Mashle: Magic and Muscles begins streaming on Netflix soon. Season 2, which was released in January 2024, adapts the beloved “The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc.” The arc is one of the best in the manga, as it pits Mash against some of the other Divine Visionary candidates in an epic tournament arc, pushing the muscular “wizard” to his limits. Season 2 of Mashle begins streaming on Netflix on June 9. The second season received great acclaim from anime fans. The sophomore season won the award for Best Comedy at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards and was nominated for Best Opening Sequence and Best OP.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 2 joins Netflix this month alongside a great line-up of returning shows. The second half of One Piece’s Egghead Arc, the new comedy Witch Watch, and the hit action series Yaiba: Samurai Legend are all continuing this month into the Summer season.
What Is ‘Mashle: Magic and Muscles’ About?

If you’ve never seen Mashle before, then you’re missing out on one of the most bonkers and entertaining fantasy anime in recent years. The series is set in a world where magic users dominate society, so much so that anyone born without magical abilities is killed to maintain strength and “purity” throughout the world. In a small hut, an old man keeps a non-magical baby, named Mash, secret from the world. Mash spends his spare time working out obsessively and eating cream puffs. But when he’s discovered, he has to use his insane physical strength to prove that he deserves to live in a world filled with magic. The official synopsis reads:
“This is a world of magic. This is a world in which magic is casually used by everyone. In a deep, dark forest in this world of magic, there is a boy who is singlemindedly working out. His name is Mash Burnedead, and he has a secret. He can’t use magic. All he wanted was to live a quiet life with his family, but people suddenly start trying to kill him one day and he somehow finds himself enrolled in Magic School. There, he sets his sights on becoming a “Divine Visionary,” the elite of the elite. Will his ripped muscles work against the best and brightest of the wizarding world? The curtain rises on this off-kilter magical fantasy in which the power of being jacked crushes any spell!”
Underneath Mashle: Magic and Muscles is an allegory for racism and classism. But, in true Mashle fashion, the series throws thematic exploration aside for exciting fight scenes where Mash must figure out how to best each wizard without using magic, and Dumb & Dumber levels of comedy. Season 1 is already streaming on Netflix.
