Michelle Williams To Star In FX’s Limited Series From ‘The Dropout’ Creator Liz Meriwether & Director Leslye Headland

Nov 30, 2023

Michelle Williams hasn’t been up to much since “The Fabelmans” last year, but that’s about to change. Deadline reports that the actress will star in and produce “Dying For Sex,” an upcoming limited series for FX. Based on the hit Wondery podcast, the show follows Williams as a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer who leaves her husband of fifteen years to explore her sexuality before she passes away. As she embarks on her adventure of self-discovery, her best friend stays by her side until the very end.

And Williams isn’t the only star power attached to the limited series. Writers Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock will adapt the podcast for the small screen, while Leslye Headland will direct. Snagging writes from “The Dropout” and “Only Murders In The Building” is smart pull for FX here, but it’s worth nothing that Meriwether and Headland are under overall deals at 20th Television. TV viewers will recognize Headland’s name as director and co-creator of Netflix‘s “Russian Doll.” She’s also the showrunner for the upcoming Disney+ “Star Wars” series, “The Acolyte.”
But Meriwether and Rosenstock will serve as co-creators and executive producers on “Dying For Sex,” with Headland also executive producing. Longttime Meriwether collaborator Katherine Pope is also part of the executive producing team with Nikkie Boyer, the host and co-creator of the Wondery Inc. and the “Dying For Sex” podcast.
“Dying For Sex” marks Williams’ return to FX after starring in the 2019 limited series “Fosse/Verdon.” She won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series or Movie for her work on the show. The actress also won a Golden Globe for her turn in “The Fabelmans,” also receiving her fifth Oscar nomination for her performance in the film. So, suffice it to say that Williams will bring her A-game to this role, which feels tailor-made for her talents.
Meanwhile, Meriwether and Rosenstock are FX veterans. Meriweather created “The Dropout” for  FX On Hulu, and created the Fox comedy series “New Girl.” She also has co-creator/executive producer credits for “Single Parents” and “Bless This Mess.” Rosenstock worked with Meriwether on “New Girl” and “Single Parents,” and has a consulting producer credit on “Only Murders In The Building.”
“Dying For Sex” was in the works earlier this year, but the guild strikes postponed its various deals getting finalized. But with all of that completed now, expect production on the series to get underway soon, with a late 2024 relase a possiblility.
