Netflix’s New Sci-Fi Series Premieres At SXSW Tomorrow, Hits Streamer On March 21

Mar 7, 2024

After “The Gentlemen,” is “3 Body Problem” the most anticipated Netflix series release of Q1 2024? Most definitely, and for several reasons. For one, it’s D.B. Weiss and David Benioff‘s return to prestige TV after the ill-fated final season of “Game Of Thrones.” It’s also an adaptation of Liu Cixin‘s 2008 novel, the first in what’s arguably the most heralded sci-fi trilogy of the past two decades. And the new series kicks off SXSW tomorrow night in Austin as the festival’s opening night TV premiere, with Netflix promoting the premiere with a new final trailer.

“3 Body Problem” is so much more than sci-fi: it’s a genre-bending tale that redefines what the genre is capable of. And while Weiss and Benioff promise that their version isn’t a straight adaptation, the show’s central story remains the same: someone, or something, is targeting the world’s best scientists, forcing a detective to hunt down the reasons for this global threat.
Here’s an official synopsis for “3 Body Problem,” courtesy of Netlflix:
A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
Benedict Wong and Eiza González lead the cast of “3 Body Problem,” which also includes Jess Hong, Jovan Adeop, and John Bradley.  Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Rosalind Chao, Sir Jonathan Pryce, and Ben Schnetzer also star.  Liam Cunningham, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Saam Usmani, and Eve Ridley round the main cast (which astute eyes will notice features several “Game Of Thrones” alumni).
As noted earlier “3 Body Problem” has its world premiere at SXSW tomorrow. After that, the series premieres on Netflix on March 21. Watch the final trailer for the series below.
