Overlooked 2020s Romance Movie Becomes Netflix Hit 3 Years After Release

Sep 24, 2023

Summary

All My Life, a romance movie directed by Marc Meyers, has become a hit on Netflix three years after its theatrical release. It’s currently holding the number 7 spot on the streamer’s top 10 list. The movie is based on a true story, chronicling one couple’s journey to put on their wedding after the groom is diagnosed with liver cancer. The film, which was distributed by Universal Pictures, was released in December 2020, receiving mixed reviews from critics and earning only $2 million at the box office.

All My Life, Universal Pictures’ overlooked romance movie, has now become a hit on Netflix almost three years after its release. Directed by Marc Meyers, the film chronicles the true story of Solomon Chau and Jennifer Carter, a young couple who accelerates their wedding plans after Solomon is diagnosed with liver cancer. All My Life earned mixed reviews from critics upon its release and ultimately brought in less than $2 million at the box office.

Now, according to the Netflix top 10 list, All My Life has seen a resurgence in popularity. As of this writing, the film sits at the number seven spot on the list, following just behind The Croods at number six. All My Life beats movies like Leatherface, which sits at number eight, The Boss Baby at number 9, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back at number 10.

How All My Life Was Received

Released in December 2020, All My Life didn’t make a splash at the box office. Part of this is undoubtedly because of the COVID-19 pandemic saw movie theaters across the country close up shop. Movies of all genres and scales took sizable box office hits or were postponed, and many pivoted to a day and date release strategy.

Made on a budget of $25 million, All My Life’s box office currently sits at a meager $1.96 million. The reviews for the movie weren’t great, with critics praising the chemistry between lead actors Henry Shum Jr. and Jessica Rothe, but taking issue with its clichéd story and dependence on cheap sentimentality. All My Life’s Rotten Tomatoes score currently sits at 57%, with its audience score not much higher at 60%.

While All My Life came and went with little fanfare in 2020, the rise of streaming has allowed overlooked movies to eventually find their audiences. Arguably part of the reason for the movie’s failure theatrically is that it feels like a straight-to-streaming kind of movie, and it’s clearly connecting with people now that it’s easily accessible. It’s too late for All My Life’s bottom line, but the film’s popularity on Netflix is further proof that any movie can have a second life after its theatrical debut.
