Project Hail Mary Review
Mar 31, 2026
There’s a moment early in Project Hail Mary where you realize this isn’t the movie you thought you signed up for. You come in expecting a high-concept sci-fi survival story. What you get instead is something much warmer, much simpler, and honestly, much more charming.
Project Hail Mary is less about saving the world and more about connection. And somehow, that ends up being the thing that makes it work.
The Good
A Sci-Fi Story Built on Heart

At its core, this is a story about collaboration. Not just in the “we need to save Earth” sense, but in a deeply personal way. Ryland Grace isn’t your typical hero. He’s not brave in the traditional sense. He’s not even particularly eager to be there. He’s just a guy trying to figure things out as he goes.
And that’s exactly why he works.
Ryan Gosling brings a quiet charm to the role that carries the entire film. He plays Grace as a slightly awkward, very human genius. The kind of guy who can solve world-ending problems but might still fumble a conversation. It’s subtle, it’s funny, and it makes him incredibly easy to root for.
Honestly, this might be the best Ryan Gosling performance I’ve seen in years. Not because it’s flashy, but because it feels real.
The Unexpected Friendship That Steals the Movie
Then there’s Rocky. I’m not going to spell it out too much, because part of the joy is discovering how this relationship unfolds. But what I will say is this: Rocky is the emotional backbone of this movie.
This turns into a full-on buddy movie in space, and it works way better than it has any right to.
The way the film builds communication between the two is genuinely fun to watch. It leans into science, math, and problem-solving instead of shortcuts, and that makes every small breakthrough feel earned.
By the time the movie really locks into that relationship, you’re all in.
Simple Storytelling Done Right

One of the most surprising things about Project Hail Mary is how simple it feels. Yes, the science is complex. Yes, the stakes are massive. But the storytelling itself is clean and easy to follow. The movie uses flashbacks effectively to fill in the gaps without overcomplicating things, letting the audience piece everything together alongside Grace.
It’s not trying to be clever. It’s trying to be clear. And that’s exactly why it works.
That simplicity also opens the door for something you don’t always get in modern sci-fi: a sense of childlike wonder. There’s a curiosity to the way the film explores space, discovery, and even friendship that feels refreshingly sincere.
At times, it honestly feels like a modern-day E.T. Just with a lot more math and a lot more pressure.
Cinematography, Sound, and That Big Screen Feel
Visually, the film is strong across the board. The use of color and lighting stands out immediately. This isn’t the cold, sterile version of space we’re used to. There’s warmth here. There’s texture. It feels lived in.
The camera work and transitions are consistently engaging, with some shots that genuinely feel like they were pulled straight out of a comic book panel.
The cinematography and sound design are the real stars of the show.
The film also makes great use of silence. There are moments where everything just drops out, and it pulls you deeper into Grace’s isolation. Then when the music kicks back in, it hits harder.
And yes, if you’re like me and you love when space movies lean into orchestral scores, you’re going to have a good time here.
This is a surprisingly cozy movie for something about the end of the world.
It’s funny in small, natural ways. It’s charming without trying too hard. And more importantly, it never loses sight of what actually matters: the characters.
This is the kind of sci-fi film you can actually recommend to people who don’t even like sci-fi.
It’s accessible, it’s emotional, and it never gets lost in its own ideas.
The Bad
It Stretches Just a Little Too Long

As much as I enjoyed the journey, there’s a point where you start to feel the runtime.
The movie runs over two and a half hours, and while most of it earns that time, the final stretch does start to drag just a bit. You can feel the story holding on longer than it needs to.
It doesn’t ruin the experience, but you definitely notice it.
A Few Lingering Questions

There are also a couple of things that feel a little underexplored.
We get clear answers about some events, but not all of them. Certain backstory elements, especially surrounding the crew, feel like they could have used just a little more clarity.
It’s not enough to break the story, but it does leave you with a few questions once the credits roll.
There are one or two creative choices that might catch you off guard.
Nothing major, just the kind of moments where you tilt your head slightly and go, “Okay… interesting.”
I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say one particular musical decision near the end might have you doing a quick double take.
Final Thoughts
Project Hail Mary is one of those movies that sneaks up on you.
It starts as a mystery. Turns into a survival story. Then quietly becomes something much more personal.
It’s about problem-solving, sure. But more than that, it’s about connection. It’s about learning how to understand someone completely different from you. And in a story about saving the world, that ends up being the most important thing.
This is a warm, funny, and genuinely heartfelt sci-fi film that reminds you why these stories work in the first place.
Also… quick question.
How does this man maintain that haircut in space?
