Sean Baker Takes Best Director At 2025 DGA Awards
Feb 11, 2025
It was a busy Saturday night as the Producers were handing out their PGA Awards in Century City and a mile away, the Directors Guild of America was honoring their own in Beverly Hills. The DGA Awards include a slight surprise as Sean Baker took home Best Director for “Anora.”. And, predictably, Frederick E. O. Toye repeated his September Emmy win with a DGA Award in the Drama Series category for “Shōgun.”

Like the PGA Award for Best Picture (Producer), the DGA Award has been a somewhat reliable precursor for predicting the Best Director Oscar. Since 2001 the two honors have only misaligned three times, the last being in 2020 when Sam Mendes won the DGA for “1917” and Bong Joon Ho took the Academy Award for “Parasite.” This year, “Conclave’s” Edward Berger is the only DGA nominee not to earn the equivalent Oscar nod. That went to “The Substance’s” Coralie Fargeat instead.
RaMell Ross won the First-time theatrical direction award for “Nickel Boys” while Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev took the Documentary honor for “Porcelain War.”
in other categories. Steven Zaillian won the Limited Series DGA for “Ripley.” And, notably, Lucia Aniello took the comedy Series honor for “Hacks.”
