Secret Invasion Clip Finds Nick Fury & Maria Hill Reflecting on The Blip
Aug 31, 2023
The latest look at the upcoming Marvel series, Secret Invasion, finds Nick Fury and his fellow agent, confidante, and friends Maria Hill discussing the hardships and the effect of The Blip. Released courtesy of the official Disney+ Twitter account, the footage sees Fury and Hill playing a game of chess while Hill doubts Fury’s ability to win the real-life game of chess he will have to play in order to once again save the world. Check out the new clip from Secret Invasion below.
“You were never the same after the Blip,” Hill says to Fury, with the once great S.H.I.E.L.D. director seemingly beginning the series as a shadow of his former self after suffering the erasure from existence courtesy of Thanos and The Snap. Fury will need to remember who he was once pretty quickly in Secret Invasion, which finds the Marvel hero going up against a group of shapeshifting Skrulls who have begun to infiltrate Earth.
This latest clip is just one look at the Disney+ series, with the most recent teaser for the upcoming Marvel series finding Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury preparing for war. Released via Twitter, the teaser comes with a side of character posters, with the “added context” feature warning us all that things may not be what they seem…
“These images may be misleading,” the first caption begins. “Not everyone is who they may seem in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion. Be careful who you trust.” Each message comes with its own warning, advising us all that “The invasion has already begun,” to “Question everything,” to “Trust no one,” and, in a callback to one of Nick Fury’s best moments, to “Keep both eyes open.”
Secret Invasion will be loosely based on the comic book arc of the same name, and follows Nick Fury as he uncovers a conspiracy. A group of shape-shifting Skrulls have begun to infiltrate Earth in positions of power around the world, and Fury must turn to the likes of Everett K. Ross, Maria Hill, and Talos to stop it and save humanity.
The new posters put the spotlight on the core cast, which includes the likes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, and Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Several new faces are also set to join the MCU, including Barbie star Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, the leader of a group of rebel Skrulls; Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Talos’ daughter; and Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, a high-ranking MI6 agent and old ally of Fury’s.

Secret Invasion Looks to Classic Espionage Noir for Inspiration
Disney+
Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has revealed the inspiration behind the Marvel series, turning to classic examples of espionage Noir such as Orson Welles’ The Third Man as well as the lone gunman Western, The Searchers. “We talked a lot about classic espionage noir, like The Third Man,” the filmmaker explained. “As Nick moves through it, he walks out of a noir and into a Western. He becomes the lone gunslinger walking down Main Street looking for bad guys to vanquish. We go from The Third Man to John Wayne in The Searchers, and Sam walks effortlessly from one into the next.”
Secret Invasion is the first Disney+ in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fifth phase is now underway, beginning with the somewhat divisive Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania back in February. Thankfully, things have gotten a lot more positive thanks to the recent release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel set to be followed by The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, and Blade. On the small screen, Secret Invasion will be followed by the likes of Loki season two, Echo, the second season of What If…?, Ironheart, WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and the Daredevil reboot, Daredevil: Born Again.
Secret Invasion is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on June 21, 2023.
