Selena Gomez Cries & ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Gets a Boycott
Jan 28, 2025
In light of increased ICE raids arresting and deporting Latin Americans, actor and singer Selena Gomez took to her Instagram stories to try and record a message through her sobs. “I’m so sorry,” Gomez said to her 422 million Instagram followers. “I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” Of course, humanity is rotten, and so she began receiving an onslaught of verbal abuse and mockery from people online, prompting her to share (and delete) a post saying, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”
Now her series Only Murders in the Building is trending on social media as fans of President Trump discuss boycotting it as a reaction to Gomez’s tearful message, which has been shared on Twitter (currently X); you can see it below.
Gomez’s message has received many comments like this one from @cookieclean: “is she referring to the 300,000 children reported missing during the biden administration that 75,000 have been found in less than a week in the new admin? huh… whats sad about that? stop letting kids be used as cartel bait to get in the country… thats whats sad.” Most commenters are a bit less verbose, such as @debayo_xx, who simply said, “lmao who’s falling for this theatrics??”
The attacks even extended to her series with Steve Martin and Martin Sheen, Only Murders in the Building. People on social media, such as @JamesDolla52543, were ready to boycott the show. They wrote the following:
1. Just asking, is she here legally?
2. I enjoyed “Only Murders in the Building. I will not be watching another second of it. Why would you facilitate people wanting to destroy what you have, love and enjoy?

Selena Gomez Has a History of Speaking Out Against Trump
This is hardly the first time that Gomez, who is currently filming Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building, has spoken out against the immigration policy of Donald Trump and the Republican Party. After producing the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented during Trump’s previous term as President, Gomez wrote a 2019 piece for Time titled, “‘I Feel Afraid for My Country.’ Selena Gomez on America’s Immigration Crisis.” She wrote:
“Immigration goes beyond politics and headlines. It is a human issue, affecting real people, dismantling real lives. How we deal with it speaks to our humanity, our empathy, our compassion. How we treat our fellow human beings defines who we are.
I don’t claim to be an expert. I’m not a politician, I’m not a doctor, and I don’t work in the system at all. I understand it’s flawed and that we need rules and regulations, but we also have to remember that our country was formed by people who came here from other countries. It’s time to listen to the people whose lives are being directly affected by immigration policies. It’s time to get to know the individuals whose complex stories have been reduced to basic headlines.”
In that same piece, Gomez reminded people that she’s an adult who can handle criticism, and that it’s more important to speak out and risk being criticized than to stay silent and complicit. “The truth is, the worst criticism I can imagine is still nothing compared to what undocumented immigrants face every day,” Gomez wrote. “Fear shouldn’t stop us from getting involved and educating ourselves on an issue that affects millions of people in our country.”
Selena Gomez’s new film, Emilia Pérez, recently received 13 Oscar nominations (along with its own controversy). You can stream it on Netflix.
