Seth McFarlane’s Foul-Mouthed Teddy Bear Returns In A ‘90s-Set Peacock Prequel
Nov 16, 2023
Remember “Ted,” writer/director/producer Seth McFarlane’s R-rated foul-mouthed Teddy Bear movie with Mark Wahlberg that spawned a hit film and a sequel (which wasn’t so beloved). Well, it’s back as a ’90s set event prequel series that looks back on the character when Wahlberg’s character was a boy.

In this prequel version, the young John Bennett is played by Max Burkholder (“Parenthood”), and yes, McFarlane voices the loud-mouthed cocky Teddy bear again. The series also stars Alanna Ubach (“Euphoria”), Scott Grimes (“The Orville”), and Giorgia Whigham (“13 Reasons Why”), who all join McFarlane’s iconic teddy bear for some laugh-out-loud adventures.
McFarlane is an exec on the series but also a director and writer. Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh are the writers and showrunners of the series.
“Our series is a prequel to the ‘Ted’ movies,” the trio of creators said in a statement. “It takes place in the nineties but is based on the timeless truth that being sixteen sucks. The only thing that makes it tolerable is going through it with a friend, even if that friend is a has-been magical teddy bear with a foul mouth and a proclivity for drug use.”
All seven episodes of “Ted,” including a supersized premiere, will debut only on Thursday, January 11, 2024, on Peacock.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In this comedic prequel event series to the Ted films, it’s 1993, and Ted the bear’s (Seth MacFarlane) moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts, with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach), and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham). Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.
“Ted” debuts on Peacock on January 11, 2024. Watch the first teaser trailer below.
