Skincare Director Austin Peters on His L.A. Satire & Elizabeth Banks’ Great Performance
Aug 15, 2024
Filmmaker Austin Peters spoke with MovieWeb’s Will Sayre about his great new film, Skincare, with Elizabeth Banks, Lewis Pullman, Nathan Fillion, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and many others. He breaks down the great performances, the story behind the movie, and its sharp satire. Skincare is out Aug. 16, 2024, from IFC Films.
In Skincare, legendary facialist-to-the-stars Hope Goldman (Elizabeth Banks) is preparing to enter the next phase of her career by launching her own retail line of skincare products. However, she begins to sense that someone is trying to sabotage her business and destroy her life after she becomes entangled in a series of menacing situations. Consumed with paranoia, Hope goes on an investigation across Hollywood to find out who is responsible and save her business- by any means necessary.
Skincare is Peters’ first narrative feature film. In 2017, he directed the feature documentary Give Me Future about the free Major Lazer concert in Havana, Cuba that drew half a million fans. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was one of the first films acquired by Apple.
Peters’ stylistic approach can be seen across the many music videos and commercials he’s directed over the years working with top artists HAIM, Charli XCX, and Diplo, as well as brands Nike, Vogue, American Express, and more. His latest video is for the Beck x Orville Peck track Death Valley High and features the iconic Sharon Stone.
