The Sonic the Hedgehog film series has seen more success than normal as far as video game adaptations go, with the third installment having sped into theaters on December 20. The new film has explored exciting possibilities for the Sonic films, such as having two characters played by Jim Carrey or introducing Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also has two post-credits scenes. Each scene involves popular characters from the video game series, which should make fans happy. Moreover, the scenes set up more thrilling action in future Sonic projects, one of which has already been greenlit by Paramount Pictures.

Sonic’s Mid-Credits Scene Shows Fan-Favorite Characters

In the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the audience sees Sonic running through a dark forest. He’s racing his friends, just like he does at the start of the movie, and he stops to look for them before realizing he’s entered New York. While he’s stopped, a mysterious robot raises its blaster and takes aim at Sonic.
The blaster belongs to Metal Sonic, who’s become an iconic character since his first appearance in the video games in Sonic CD. Metal Sonic is a robot modeled closely after Sonic to destroy the blue hedgehog. The robot was created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who’s already tried to destroy Sonic multiple times throughout the film series, but he also supposedly dies in the finale of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Perhaps this is the series’ way of keeping Robotnik alive, though it’s a bit unusual as Robotnik typically employs one Metal Sonic at a time.
Luckily, a cloaked figure appears and smashes the Metal Sonics with a hammer, a weapon that’s instanly recognizable to Sonic fans. The figure removes her hood, revealing herself to be the character Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog who plays a key part in Sonic’s history.
Amy Rose also first appeared in the video game Sonic CD and has had major roles in most Sonic games and shows since then. She’s become one of Sonic’s main friends and even has a complicated relationship with the hedgehog. Amy Rose is often affectionate to Sonic, but he rarely reciprocates the same level of affection.
The Post-Credits Scene Hints at a Character’s Return

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog battle each other in an epic fight, before they realize they have a common enemy, Gerald Robotnik. Gerald wants to blow up the Earth with a giant cannon, and Shadow and Ivo Robotnik sacrifice themselves to stop him. However, the post-credits scene shows that there might be more in store for the characters.
The final post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is short, but it shows Shadow the Hedgehog picking up his wristbands, which he took off when stopping Gerald Robotnik’s cannon. The wristbands are his inhibitor rings, which help limit his power. Now that Sonic and Shadow have made amends, Shadow shouldn’t need to take the rings off again, and might work with Sonic in the future. If Shadow survived, there’s also the chance that Ivo Robotnik survived and could still appear in future movies.

Both Scenes Set Up More for the Sonic Universe

The day before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in theaters, Paramount Pictures announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was in the works. Both credits scenes leave room for exciting plots that could happen in the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Even though audiences watched Robotnik sacrifice himself, his influence will still be felt in the fourth film, as his robot army of Metal Sonics won’t stop until they destroy Sonic. Sonic’s going to need help from his friends like Amy Rose and Tails to escape danger. There are ways for Robotnik to come back as well, or his assistant, Agent Stone, could be heading Robotnik’s operations instead.

In the game, Sonic needs to collect time stones to reverse time and stop Robotnik from taking over a planet. Perhaps Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could show Sonic going after time stones to bring back Robotnik, so the scientist can stop the robots, though it’s too soon to tell what direction the series will take.
It’s also clear that Shadow the Hedgehog will have a prominent role in upcoming Sonic projects. Keanu Reeves is perfect for the character, and audiences want to see more, which is possible thanks to that post-credits scene. Shadow could just return in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, or he could even get his own spin-off like Knuckles had with the Knuckles series on Paramount+. It’s unclear what specific path the series will take, but the forethought put into both post-credits scenes shows that the filmmakers are working hard to bring Sonic back to the big screen as fast as possible.
