‘Suicide Squad’ Director Gets Backlash From Zack Snyder Fans After Supporting ‘Superman’ Trailer

Dec 28, 2024

James Gunn is taking the DC Universe in a new direction. The first trailer for Superman was released yesterday, and fans are understandably hyped. But, there is, and probably always will be, a section of the DC fan base that will call for Zack Snyder
to come back until their last dying breath. David Ayer is a director who has bad blood with Warner Bros. and DC, but even he was able to set aside his differences with the studio to support James Gunn’s new movie. Surprise, surprise… the Snyder fans weren’t happy about it.

Ahead of Superman’s trailer release, David Ayer took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his support. Ayer directed the critically panned DCEU outing Suicide Squad
. However, he insists that the studio interfered during editing, and kickstarted a campaign to release the #AyerCut. But Ayer asked his fans not to campaign on the day of Superman’s big trailer unveiling. “The new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad,” he wrote. “As a film makers I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible. I just want to publicly say it would be nice to stay far clear of Thursday for any campaigning.”
Did Zack Snyder fans read the message, get in touch with their sympathetic side, and halt their campaigning for a day? Of course not. In fact, they even turned on David Ayer. The comments were littered with hateful messages. Ayer returned to X later that day to defend his viewpoint from the angry fans. “My Lord. If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point,” he began. “I cannot f*cking wait to see Jame’s trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. And absolutely am sure he crushed it. Because that simple optimism of Superman is all over it. And the little kid in me needs that right now. I’m a bad guy for that? So be it.”
Zack Snyder Fans Take Trolling to a Whole New Level

It’s not an overstatement to call social media a disgusting place filled with spiteful and hateful opinions. Unfortunately, that extends to movie fandoms as well. While Star Wars fans are notoriously fickle, no one expresses hate like Zack Snyder’s die-hard fandom — after all, they bullied Warner Bros. into releasing Snyder’s 4-hour cut of Justice League (which really wasn’t much better!).
“Wonder if Gunn will ever give you the same respect youve show him,” says @Haydenbarton_39 in one of the calmer responses. “You’re the boss. For me, tomorrow is about fighting for Henry Cavill against a movie that began with James Gunn screwing him out of his triumphant return. It’s not campaigning per se, but it’s sending a message that we won’t tolerate CEOs who treat their actors like crap,” adds @glorfindel8675, with @CinemaFreak2001 saying, “Don’t do this, man. We’re trying to get your cut out #ReleaseTheAyerCut.”

James Gunn has addressed why the ‘Superman’ trailer opens with a defeated Man of Steel.

The replies quickly get more aggressive and unnecessary, with @AzZz1822 saying,”James Gunns little bitch – He ain’t gonna release your cut,” while @Mani05499207 adds, “So disappointing to see this tweet. How much suckery are you going to do yo wb and Gunn? All the support we showed you. And you dot this.”
Before Superman’s trailer dropped yesterday, #HenryCavillSuperman was trending on social media once again. Cavill played the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s DCEU and was, to many, the best to ever do it. Despite the films being a mixed bunch, Cavill was superb as Superman. But, Snyder’s fans can’t make it past the first stage of grief, as they refuse to accept that David Corenswet has taken on the role for James Gunn’s Superman.
