‘Suits’ Will See One Main Character Return in the Spinoff

Dec 1, 2024

The Suits drama series had a lengthy run, debuting in 2011 and drawing its final curtains in 2019. By the time the series ended with its ninth season and an impressive count of 134 episodes, it had introduced viewers to numerous characters, most of whom audiences were quite invested in. The final season of the show, despite providing closure and giving its characters a proper send-off, was admittedly shorter than its previous seasons, leaving fans with the notion that the end of Suits was somewhat abrupt.

However, the franchise is now making a comeback, although in a different setting. Aptly named Suits: LA, the offshoot will be set in Los Angeles and have a fresh primary cast, different from the parent show. While the spinoff’s announcement was met with much excitement, the anticipation of fans has only grown in light of the news that one of the most iconic characters from the original Suits series will be reprising his role in Suits: LA. It has been confirmed that Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter will be a part of Suits: LA for a ‘three-episode guest arc.’ Despite the fact that Harvey will not hold a permanent role in the spinoff, there are a few things fans want to see from the character other than the wit and charm that is now characteristic of him.

What Is the ‘Suits’ Spinoff About?
Release Date February 23, 2025 Seasons 1

Similar to its predecessor, Suits: LA will be a workplace drama with a legal twist to it. The narrative is expected to follow Ted Black, played by Stephen Amell, as he handles legal cases in Los Angeles. Black is a former New York prosecutor who has now established a law firm in Los Angeles specializing in criminal and entertainment cases.

Although following a format similar to the parent show, Suits: LA deals with a different set of circumstances, with its focus on criminal and entertainment law and an entirely new cast. However, it does promise some connections to the original series. Given that the series’ protagonist is from New York, where the original show was based, it is highly likely that Black will share some connection with the characters in the parent show.

Does Harvey Specter Still Have a Relationship with Mike and Rachel?

Harvey’s appearance in Suits: LA promises to bring audiences information about his relationship with those in the original series, especially Mike and Rachel. The Suits season finale sees Harvey getting engaged and then marrying Donna in the same ceremony as Louis and Sheila. Following this, he announces his decision to leave the firm and join Mike and his wife, Rachel, at their legal clinic in Seattle.

With Harvey’s return to the Suits universe, it is only expected that viewers are curious about the remaining characters and want to see what Harvey’s relationship is with them. The relationship between Harvey and Mike has always been special, and one of the final scenes between the duo in the season finale is a mirror of Mike’s interview when he first joined the firm at the beginning of the series. Whereas Harvey was Mike’s boss back then, Mike now becomes Harvey’s boss as Harvey joins Mike’s legal clinic. Given this, it would be interesting to see how the duo’s relationship may have changed over the years.

What Has the Move to Seattle Meant for Harvey in ‘Suits?’

Moreover, it would also be interesting to see how Harvey has adjusted to life in a legal clinic. The Harvey Specter that is introduced to viewers in Season 1 of Suits would not have quit his job at a major law firm in New York and moved to Seattle to work in a legal clinic. However, the evolution of his character arc results in him understanding that there are other worthwhile causes that one can fight for. This may warrant a change in personality and perspective that would showcase a different side of Harvey.

At the time of writing, only Gabriel Macht has been confirmed as returning for the spinoff. Other members of the original cast have previously expressed their desire to return. However, no other names from the parent show have been added to the Suits: LA cast list yet. Speaking at the 2024 Golden Globes Variety pre-show about the Suits spinoff and his involvement in it, Patrick J. Adams said:

“Anyway, our fearless show-runner [Aaron Korsh is] working on that. And if we got the phone call, if I got the phone call, I’m ready to suit up again. I love the show, I love the character. And I loved working with all these people.”

Who Is Harvey’s “Friend in Need” in ‘Suits?’

Gabriel Macht’s announcement that he would be reprising his role in the spinoff is accompanied by the message, “When an old friend is in need…it’s time to take care of things and make those very ‘things’ right”. The cryptic message has aroused the curiosity of fans, and they are now eager to know who the mysterious individual is. The message insinuates that Harvey will share a pre-existing relationship with the new faces in the Suits: LA cast. What insight this gives into Harvey’s personal life and backstory remains to be seen.

Interestingly, Amell’s protagonist in Suits: LA, Ted Black, was a prosecutor in New York before starting his own firm in Los Angeles. Given this, Macht’s message may also allude to a friendship or working relationship between himself and Black, with Harvey possibly having worked with Black prior to his Suits days. If this is the case, it would be interesting to see the backstory that the spinoff offers in explaining the relationship between the duo and how it lends to Harvey’s character development.

Suits: LA was first announced in 2023, and the frequently released updates regarding the spinoff confirmed that active filming commenced in November 2024. NBC has now scheduled Suits: LA for an early 2025 release, with the series expected to premiere on February 23, 2025. Suits is now available to stream on Netflix.
