Super Mario Bros Movie Streaming Release Date Confirmed After Record-Breaking Box Office Run

Jul 11, 2023

After setting the box office aflame earlier this year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s streaming release date has been revealed. The animated adventure marked the second major adaptation of the iconic Nintendo games, following plumber Mario and his brother Luigi as they are transported to the magical realm of Mushroom Kingdom and must fight with Princess Peach to protect her kingdom from the evil Bowser. Chris Pratt led the star-studded cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen and Keegan-Michael Key.

With a few months gone since its record-breaking box office run, Peacock took to Twitter to officially confirm The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s streaming release date.

The post, as seen above, reveals that the animated hit will be coming to the streaming platform on August 6, exactly four months since the movie first released in theaters. It also comes a month after The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit shelves on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Could Be Peacock’s Biggest Addition

In the near-three years since it launched, Peacock has enjoyed a steady increase of subscribers, reaching as of this past December 20 million paid subscribers and seeing boosts with the help of such coverage as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Spanish. Owned by NBCUniversal, the streamer has also been host to their own studio’s movies and some third-party content, ranging from Universal’s Fast and Furious franchise to Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter movies, though the latter would eventually go back to Warner Bros. Discovery for their HBO Max platform.

While the Jurassic Park and Fast and Furious franchises may be box office titans in their own rights, the addition of The Super Mario Bros. Movie to Peacock could be the streaming platform’s biggest yet. Despite scoring mixed reviews from critics and being met with skepticism from audiences over some of its casting choices, namely Pratt as Mario, it went on to set multiple box office records, including the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated movie. Sitting at $1.349 billion worldwide, it’s also still the highest-grossing movie of the year even after such anticipated releases as The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

With this success still fresh on audiences’ minds, it will be interesting to see if it can carry over into The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s streaming release setting new records for Peacock. The last title to do something of note was Halloween Ends, which managed to rank No. 8 on the Nielsen’s Top 10 ranking in its opening weekend, the first for any Peacock release to do so, in spite of its poor reviews. With Pratt recently indicating news on a Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could be coming soon, it seems likely those who didn’t catch the movie in theaters will hop onboard with Peacock.
