Supernatural Spinoffs Get Disappointing Update from CW’s Boss
Feb 20, 2024
Summary
Fans of “Supernatural” will be disappointed as The CW has no plans for future spin-offs at the moment.
Despite its huge global fan base, there will be no more spooky adventures from the Winchester brothers.
The CW President confirmed no discussions have taken place regarding any kind of spin-off for the franchise.
The CW’s boss has very bad news for fans of Supernatural, as it seems that there are no plans for future spin-offs being considered at The CW right now. As one of the most successful series developed by the network, Supernatural has already had one spin-off in the prequel series The Winchesters, but it seems that despite the huge fan base around the world, there will be no more spooky adventures from the world of the Winchester brothers.
Supernatural Release Date September 13, 2005 Seasons 15 Studio The CW
Released in 2005, the show starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, two very different brothers who grew up without their mother and with an absent father dedicated to hunting demons and dark forces, in order to avenge the death of his wife. However, when their father mysteriously disappears, Sam and Dean must come together and continue their family’s legacy, investigating supernatural cases that will lead them to discover the truth about their past, present and future.
After the end of the original series, The CW announced The Winchesters, a prequel focused on the story of the protagonists’ parents. However, it was canceled after just one season. And it seems that there will be no more spin-offs, at least for now. During the network’s Television Critics Association winter press tour presentation, The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz shared a disappointing update on the future of the franchise (via TVLine):
“We’ve had no discussions about any kind of spinoff. Supernatural was one of the Top 10 most streamed shows last year. And it’s an incredible franchise with an incredible legacy, incredible history. We’re really excited about the new season of Walker with Jared [Padalecki].”
After the end of Supernatural, Padalecki embarked on another adventure with The CW, the remake of Walker Texas Ranger, which also had its own spin-off that didn’t work out. However, the main series performed pretty well, and continues to be one of the network’s most important productions at the moment.
In the case of Ackles, the actor worked in the production of The Winchesters, in addition to returning as Dean to narrate the story. He also joined former Supernatural showrunner and creator Eric Kripke on The Boys, playing Soldier Boy on the hit Prime Video series, and will hopefully return for the next season, coming out later this year.

Supernatural’s Many Attempts to Expand Its Legacy
The CW
The Winchesters wasn’t The CW’s first attempt at expanding the Supernatural universe. Throughout the history of the show, several spin-offs have been developed that, unfortunately, never managed to take off and have the impact of the original series.
In addition to the web series Ghostfacers and the animated adaptation, Supernatural: The Anime Series, the first official attempt to make the franchise was Bloodlines, a story that sought to explore the different clans of supernatural creatures in Chicago and the fight between them. Unfortunately, it didn’t go further than a backdoor pilot.

Later, when the end of the series was already imminent, the possibility for another group to continue Dean and Sam’s activities came up, developing the pilot for Wayward Sisters, an episode that premiered within the original series. However, the network decided not to persue that idea either. Wayward Sisters would have followed a group of women friends of the Winchesters who would form their own group to hunt and destroy demons and other dark forces.
