Sydney Sweeney Breaking 7-Year Box Office Record Is Becoming A Reality As R-Rated Thriller Shatters New Milestone
Feb 9, 2026
Sydney Sweeney’s new movie is racing to break a major box office record. The Housemaid starred Sweeney as the titular protagonist, who is hired by a wealthy wife. However, things don’t turn out as expected, as dark truths are uncovered between the two ladies. This intriguing concept has been winning over audiences since its release in theaters, and it has officially become a box office hit ever since. Now, Lionsgate announced that The Housemaid passed $350 million at the worldwide box office despite the slow Super Bowl weekend. This total includes $231 million overseas and $123.7 million domestically. As a result, the sum is $354.7 million. The R-rated thriller has been performing exceptionally well internationally, as it nabbed $14.7 million this weekend. The top markets include the UK, France, Germany, and Austria. It’s also seeing immense success in Brazil, where the movie is no. 1 in its sixth week and sees a remarkable 17% increase.

The Housemaid’s box office performance remains strong even as it became available for home release on video-on-demand. It appears that much of the strong reception is coming internationally, which could help Sweeney break a seven-year record. Although the thriller hit $300 million last month and officially became the highest-grossing movie led by Sweeney, there is still one more film that would make the record official. The young actor had a minor role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which grossed over $393 million. That technically remains her highest-grossing movie, but the chance of beating that number is looking possible due to the international performance. Last month, there were early projections that The Housemaid could end its box office run with as high as $400 million globally. If so, that would easily overtake Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and take the title as Sweeney’s all-time highest-grossing movie. Although the movie is now available on digital in the United States, it has yet to hit streaming, so there is some time left to break that seven-year record once and for all.
The Housemaid’s box office success comes after Sweeney endured back-to-back commercial failures in 2025, with Christy, Americana, and Eden. Some, like Eden, found a new audience via streaming, and it’s expected that the latest thriller will experience the same. There are no official details yet on the streaming release. Ahead of its release, The Housemaid reviews were very positive, and it currently holds a 74% score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also stars Brandon Sklenar, Amanda Seyfried, and Michele Morrone.
Thanks to the film’s blockbuster success, a sequel is in development, which would likely adapt the content of The Housemaid’s Secret. Paul Feig will return as the director, while Sweeney and Morrone are returning stars. There are no further updates on its filming and release. The Housmaid is still playing in theaters.
