The Implications of Marvel’s Secret Invasion Throughout the MCU
Aug 31, 2023
This article contains spoilers for the MCU’s Secret InvasionMarvel’s Secret Invasion was a highly anticipated show that held promise in its first few episodes, but as the show grew closer to an end, fans were disappointed in the limited direction the show went. Despite the seemingly nonexistent tie-ins to future MCU projects, the show made multiple choices that may lead to a completely changed Marvel universe moving forward.
Despite being the main character, Nick Fury doesn’t make much of an impact on the plot, but mostly reacts to other newly introduced characters’ choices. The final moments cloud his future in the MCU, and the upcoming film, The Marvels, may reveal a stronger and greater Fury from the effects of Secret Invasion. But, he may be the only connection between future MCU projects, despite the show’s greatest implications not involving Fury.
The show attempted to change the audience’s view of the Marvel universe in ways the comic of the same name did in the past, but Secret Invasion left audiences with many unanswered questions that may affect the future of the Marvel universe.
How Long Has Rhodey Been a Skrull?
Marvel Studios
Rhodey’s secret identity as a Skrull was highly anticipated by fans and Don Cheadle even teased Rhodey’s Skrull identity prior to the show’s release, but, fans weren’t too pleased with the implied events surrounding how and when Rhodey became a Skrull.
In the series finale, G’iah discovers the real Rhodey who has been kept under the Skrull base for an unknown amount of time.
His struggle to walk and the hospital gown he wears hints at the possibility that Rhodey was first captured and the new Skrull, Raava, took his place after the events of Captain America: Civil War where he was paralyzed from the waist down.
Director Ali Selim even confirmed this in an interview with ComicBook. This not only impacts every appearance of the character since then, but makes moments like his discussions with Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Tony’s funeral in Endgame loose much of its heart. Although, the fans’ uproar of disapproval may lead to a correction of Selim’s intention by Marvel. The upcoming Marvel show, Armor Wars, will most likely address the timeline of when Rhodey became a Skrull, and that will be the canon decision.

President Ritson’s Declaration of War
Marvel Studios | Disney+
In the final episode, President Ritson declared any and all alien species as enemy combatants, essentially declaring war on not only Skrulls, but every alien on Earth and throughout the galaxy. This will undoubtedly cause major problems in the future, and will most likely cause a shift in power leading to a new president in Captain America: Brave New World, in which Thaddeus Ross is president, not Ritson. The Skrulls are not the only alien species living on Earth; New Asgard is also home to various alien species and has its own government. Fans will just have to monitor Marvel’s future to see if Ritson’s statement will cause even more destruction for those seeking refuge on Earth.
President Ritson’s announcement may lead into other upcoming Marvel projects and spark even more conflict compared to the brief, but violent attacks shown in the finale. The Skrull invasion may be far from over now that Ritson has effectively banned all alien species, including Skrulls, and started war with his rash decision. While no future MCU projects hint at this tie-in, there may still be projects already announced or in the works that will address this declaration.

G’iah’s New Powers
Marvel Studios
Because of Gravik’s Super Skrull machine, G’iah now has the combined force of various villains and the majority of the MCU superheroes present for the events of the battle in Avengers: Endgame, but some of the powers they received leave questions on their origin, such as the extremis power as well as Ghost’s powers.
And these new powers presumably make G’iah the most powerful character in the MCU, but there doesn’t seem to be a plan to involve G’iah in the future of the MCU, even though Marvel has continually hinted at future projects when extremely powerful characters like Loki, Kang, or Thanos are introduced.
Her potential leaves the audience with more questions and less excitement. If G’iah has Captain Marvel’s powers, then why isn’t she involved in the upcoming film, The Marvels? Wouldn’t her powers be involved in the entanglement that occurs in the film? These questions may not be answered or even addressed in The Marvels or anytime soon, as future projects do not seemingly include G’iah. This is just one of the negatives of the show that Marvel may need to learn from to better future projects. The immense promises to an extremely connected universe may stretch Marvel too thin in terms of production.
