The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has been a huge success for AMC, and according to TWD’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, Rick Grimes’ story may not end with just one season. The return of Rick and Michonne delivered some of AMC’s best viewing figures of the last several years, so it is not surprising that everyone wants to know whether The Ones Who Live will join previous TWD spin-offs in getting an additional season.

Speaking in an interview with TV Line, Gimple directly addressed the chance of The Ones Who Live becoming more than a limited series.

I think it’s one of those “never say never” situations, but I also don’t want to tell people how the story ends. So, who knows? Maybe after seeing the end, you’ll be like, “Oh yeah, they can’t do another one because of X, Y and Z.”

The Walking Dead Lives Again Thanks to Its Spin-Offs

The Walking Dead is already moving ahead with new seasons of popular spin-offs, Dead City and Daryl Dixon. This made it a strong possibility that the Andrew Lincoln-led The Ones Who Live could also be renewed for Season 2. However, it seems that if that is the case, Gimple has learned from past mistakes and is not giving the game away too early.

Previously, the Negan/Maggie series Dead City was announced before the finale of the main Walking Dead series, leading many fans to complain that the fate of the two characters was spoiled. The same was also said when Daryl Dixon was renewed for a second season before the show even aired. Now it seems that Gimple is playing things closer to his chest about the possible return of Rick and Michonne beyond the current “limited” status of The Ones Who Live.

However, Gimple did once again voice his desire to bring the main characters of the three current spin-offs back together at some point in the future. He said:

I also get really excited about the idea of doing stuff in this world that is completely unrelated to anything. And then, you know, we have these three pretty direct spinoff shows [
Dead City
,
Daryl Dixon
and
The Ones Who Live
]. I dream of having these characters together again. I plant those seeds and I hope that I get a chance to do that. That would be wonderful.

Additionally, Gimple suggested that there are more TWD projects being dreamed up right now. He said:

“We’re in the lab right now and [working on] a lot of really strange things that could come to be. I am excited for the other possibilities, but right now they’re just possibilities.”
